Wiring a Kill switch - need help.
« on: July 08, 2007, 09:16:59 PM »

I have the Flaming River big switch and lever kit installed.
But the engine does not die.
I am using a three wire alternator. Tried using a relay on the field wires by does not work.
The Flaming River switch #1003-2, two post.
What must I do to make this work. I just spent over $100 on this kit.

Help

how did you wire the relay on the field wire ?  ... I'm not so sure you can do it with out the extra set of contacts for the field wire built into the switch ... you will probably haveto run the output of the alternator to the battery side of the kill switch.

I just used a regular relay and hooked up the field wire through it.
But because the alt feeds everything it keeps on running.
I was thinking of running the alt output directly to the battery, but have not tried it yet.

try installing the relay into the large wire going to the alternator and control it with the main wire from the battery to the started.

I think that I will have to install a 1 wire alt and try it.
Has anybody done this before?

i reckon what happens is with the motor running the alternator is producing electricity and you cut the switch out back the motor is still turning over for awhile which in turn is exciting the alternator and back feeding into the ignition through that large wire keeping everyone happy except the tech guy at the track, so when you open it up with a relay it shuts everything down. with a 1 wire you may still have a backfeed problem needing to install a diode of the correct size. much easier an cheaper to install a relay.

Not so sure this would work .. you would still be creating a "latching realy" one the alt makes current ... like with the 1st relay he tried

i am pretty sure you need to have 2 circuits in the cut off switch.

i asked one guy how he did his using the single circuit switch and he showed me the switch inside the drivers area that is switched off to cut juice to the field.

not really legitimate.

i think that will work, running the output from the alternator directly to the battery.

I was rethinking the one wire alt idea and believe that I will still have the feedback as Bob mentioned.
So being a little creative I thought that I will try and just use a toggle switch wired into the field circuit.
When racing, I will flip the switch and run on battery only, the alt won't be energized. On the return road I can unflip the switch and allow the field wire to do its job and charge the battery.
That is what I thought of doing. I still have to try it to see if it would work, I believe that it will.

a suggestion here is some alternators don't like to be switched on or off while running. some of the elecronic parts can't handle it and burn up, so just have the motor stopped when switching it.

So I tried installing a toggle switch into the field circuit.
Flipped the switch so the alt won't get a field signal, now when I push the master kill switch all goes dead.
