Death To The Spot Weld Cutter
« on: July 10, 2007, 01:57:23 AM »

I just got my spot weld cutter from eastwood and it was cutting great. But 5 Holes in the peace of crap brakes all the teeth off and cracks so i cant turn it over and use the other side explode. I paid 20$ plus shipping for this junk cutter. It cut good but the quality is bad. Its the 2 headed cutter that you can turn the head over. Its from eastwood.

Can someone help me with a good spot weld cutter that will not fall apart after a few holes.

Most any automotive paint store will have spot weld cutters in stock.  I tend to stick with the Blair brand, they are all fragile in nature ... meaning if you twist it or catch and edge it will break.  I always start by center punching the weld I am drilling out then hit it with the cutter ... just my 2 cents .... duster

i use a drill cut at a shallow angle that is much larger than the spot to be removed.
if the part that is being removed is getting scrapped i use a die grinder with a three inch diameter disc that is 1/4" thick and just grind the spot/nugget.
takes a bit of practice and is noisy and smokey.

then there is the plasma cutter were you just cut a tiny little hole so the nugget drops out.

the shallow bit is the best though.

i know what you mean about the 20$ cutter desintigrating, pretty hard to go easy when you have a 100 or so spots waiting for some love.

then a thin chisle or gasket scraper to shear off what is hanging on between the panels.

I bought mine from snapon, about $25, he replaces it when it breaks. I get 75-125 cuts before it bbreaks.

try these guys

http://www.dentfix.com/viewItem.asp?idProduct=66&item=DF-1680T_8.0MM_HSCO_Titanium_Spot_Weld_Drill_Bit

I actually use these drills made for Boron steel now instead of the Titanium ones but I use em everyday so the $$ is worth it to me.

http://www.dentfix.com/viewItem.asp?idProduct=89&item=DF-1690_Boron_Killer_(STC)_Spot_Weld_Drill_Bit_for_UHSS_Steel

I use the Boron cutting bits in this. it's like a hand held drill press, from the blus collar to the drill tip moves out to meet the sheetmetal under air pressure while the drill spins. It's pissa.

I think the big issue with spot cutters and making them last longer is:

1. They have to be perfectly level.
2. They have to be bigger that the welded spot itself.

I have always used the Blair type with no issue. Well, I say no issue. When first starting to use them, I used plain ole SAE 30 oil and would not too many cuts.  I switched to cutting oil and low get the 80 to 100 the other folks are talking about without issue. I used it for creating plug weld holes for welding in new floor boards withsame cutting oil. Worked great but 3/8" holes were too big so i reduced to 0.25" holes with drill bit. Less grinding due to shorter mound.

For me, the cuting oil was the key. I had to cut a 3" hole in some sheet metal using a hole saw. No issue with the right oil.

Most people spin their drill motor too fast when drilling hard metals like steel.  You are cutting the metal, not grinding it.

Very true I was using mine in a rechargable drill on slow speed made a lot of cuts without a problem...no lube .Then one day both of my batteries ended up dead and I went to my other drill which is faster the variable is hard to control.Wasn't so good for the cutter seemed to break off the teeth much easier .
