Steering box adjustment?
« on: July 13, 2007, 10:26:28 PM »

I'm rebuilding my steering box and I've got it all back together.  My question is on the proper adjustment.  I've got the end play on the worm gear set to (just a bit).  There is one other adjustment that sets the height of the main shaft that the pitman arm bolts to.  Any ideas on how that's supposed to be set?  If not I'll just go forth with what seems right and fill it with gear oil.  It should be a good box.  It's got the 20:1 worm gear in it and I replaced both of the seals.  I had the housing powder coated gloss black, so it looks nice too.  Now watch - I'll probably figure out a way to put the rack and pinion in there and I'll never use it   \/][ Frustrated

When I rebuilt mine I just set it up with what felt right. hammer I wouldn't use gear oil in it though. Use a good quality grease, Dow Corning Molykote G-4700 is what I put in mine. You can pack it in as you're putting it together, then shoot a little more in through the fill hole in the top when it's all together. Just my 2cts. Willie
