Cheap heat reflective insulation.
« on: July 16, 2007, 04:02:46 PM »

I dont post messages on here often, but this really caught my attention. I was at a BBQ and Talking with a buddy of mine who drives a 69 Camaro. He showed me what he was using as a heat barrier inside his car. Instead of using dynamat, which has noise and heat insulation properties, He is using something called Reflectix, Its like bubble wrap with aluminum sheeting on each side of it. It blocks radiant heat. I doubt it does much for noises, but you cant beat the price. $25 for a roll 24"x25ft. You can find it at Lowe's. Of Course you'll need some adhesive spray. So far I've only installed it on my roof. but I plan on covering my entire passenger compartment with it.

I thought about useing this stuff , but I thought if the bubbles lose their air much of the insulation  value       would be gone.

hmm.  might work really well for somewhere that doesnt have something (like feet) squashing the bubbles out.  behind the headliner might be a really good choice.

hmmmmmmm.......

you can buy a standard interior kit of dynomat on ebay for about $100 and have it sound like a new car, or that to cover the inside for $50 and pop bubbles all day

A new car, with 60's aerodynamics?  Nahh.  Dynamat is a rip, there has to be a better, less expensive, option.

go to home depot or lowe's and get a hot water heater insulation kit.  they're cheap.  aluminized on one side and insulation on the other.  two should probably do a whole floorpan.

When I had my interior done, I took a few rolls of this insulation(the bubble stuff) to the upholsterer. He put it in and it has been in for 4 years now. No problems at all ,even at the floor where your heel meets for gas & brake. This stuff is a very dense bubble , not like your regular bubble wrap, You would have to roll over it with a steamroller to flatten the bubbles out. Bought mine at a street rod meet.

Unless we're in a rush, Why don't you get a roll of that water heater wrap, it's pretty cheap,  put some on the floor by your gas pedal with a bit of carpet and see how it stands up. I think you may be pleased.
