Trying to build up the nerve to paint!
« on: July 18, 2007, 10:21:41 PM »

Looking ahead to our 73 Swinger, its going to need paint inside and out.  I'd like to maybe try and shoot Y2 (SunFire yellow - non metallic) in the engine bay and door jambs before installing the motor and such.   The question is WHAT primer/sealer to use first.  90% will be old paint, the remainder patches and etch primer.   It must be very user friendly, no isocyanates or other nastys.

I'm thinking about using a HVLP to shoot it to minimize overspray.   Any recomendations on the best combination for price / quality for the primer AND paint?   I was told Limco 2 was pretty good acrylic enamel.   Single stage is best for this one.

Exterior shoot may be done by M@@co once done, since we have no booth.

The only information I can offer is not to skimp on quality. I've painted a couple of cars and boats years ago. One was my 69 Charger... 76 Corvette yellow.  Non metallic, went on real easy. Then my 80 Trans Am. That was basic black. Also real easy. Later on, I did a speed boat blue metallic with silver graphics. Didn't go too badly. They probably don't even make the same products I've used anymore. I used all Dupont primers, thinners and paint. I mixed all products with measuring cups and filtered everything.

Also, use the HVLP gun. I have a couple different size guns for different parts of the car. Helps a lot too.

What moparrr07 said............start with one primer/sealer and stick with that brand all the way through to finish.......if you mix brands, you will pay in the long run.

I haven't used this paint so I don't know if it's good but I'm thinking I may try it. Some good info there too. This is it, www.paintforcars.com. Good luck.

Duplicolor has a new paint system that is matched and relatively inexpensive called "Paint Shop." its all pre-mixed, ready to spray, its a Primer/sealer, basecoat, and clearcoat system. It uses new laquer technology and is intended for the DIY guy and an HVLP gun. It costs $19.99 per quart and all the major auto parts stores carry it. The bad part is they only offer 8 colors.

There has been a lot of talk on some other sites about Tremclad, Rustoleum and John Deere paints. I believe they are a synthetic enamel. Is that the same thing as a acrylic enamel Huh  I am looking for a low toxic paint to use because of health reasons.  Anyone know a site where all these paints are explained   Dunno

Thats exactly why I am going to spray with the Paint SHop stuff, it is laquer based, but uses new different low-volitility chemicals, its specifically designed for DIY guys and does not require any mixing. I first saw it being used on the TV shows, Trucks and Gearz, its safer and easier to use, has no recoat window to worry about, all you need to worry about is spray tecnique. The stuff is relatively new, only out for a few months, but I saw a car painted with it and it looked good. I am getting ready to paint my car in about a month with it. I will keep a record of it with pictures and post it here when I'm done.

Just a warning.Laquer based paints and primers are not very durable. They chip and sunfade very easy.just make sure store it out of the weather.

That is true, other types of paint have better chip and stain resistance. But I do not live on a dirt or gravel road, and I keep all my cars in a garage. Keep in mind that all cars were painted with laquers until the late 70's. Chances are, its on your Mopar. And I can tell you I had a buigger of a time sanding that stuff off my car, whoever says laquer does not stick is full of beans.

This stuff is laquer based, but does not use laquer solvents. It is a basecoat/clearcoat system with a matching primer/sealer. I tested the stuff yesterday to see how it reacted on several different finishes. I tried it on Urethane clear, urethane base with clear sanded off, high build primer (laquer and polyester), and on original factory laquer and primer. It went on all of these without lifting, cracking, crazing, bleeding, or running. I was pretty impressed because I figured that at least one of these would have reacted to laquer. Afterwards I tried sanding it, since it is a sealer, it did clog the paper, but that is normal as it is supposed to be the last step before paint. So far the stuff seems pretty good, I will keep people updated as I start painting.

Fly thanks for the tip on the paint. I called Duplicolor with some questions and I think I'm going to use it on my project. Thanks again.

Don't forget to wear a respirator, I was spraying with it a little yesterday, it did not smell bad at all, but it gave me a headache later.
