Steering Linkage Questions-Need Help
« on: February 08, 2006, 04:49:10 PM »

Ok I put a 73 SB K-frame on my 72 Demon (originaly a S6), what steering componants will work on the 73 K? Is the tie rods, idler arm and centerlink the same or is 68-72 different than 73-76? Also I have a manual steering box that I'm planning on using but I'm not sure what year A body it's from, so how do I tell what Pitman arm to get? There's different ones correct? I know manual/power is different but is there different manual ones? Trying to put the steering together today, need answers quick!

hi ryan first steering boxes, all should fit a& b body b body one are better because they have a bearing instead of a sleeve , the pitman arm needs to match the shaft in the box. there's a large and small slector shafts. try to use the center link from a v-8 and get the matching idler arm. for tie-rod ends use  c- body 11/16 with matching sleeves. they stronger than the stock a- body. for my 2 cents buy the hd one piece sleeves from just suspension. idler arms are the same  moog k 7086. pitman arms are k7076 for manual k7074 for power. stock tie-rods are ES401R for 2 and ES401L for 2, sleeves are ES319S for 2 for c-body ES352R es355RL and ES440S for the sleeves  hope this help james

the pitman arm needs to match the shaft in the box. there's a large and small slector shafts.

Ok how do I tell if this is the small sector shaft or large? I have none to compare it to? Anyone have a measurement of the small vs. large?

Thanks James!

Ryan, I used the solid sleeves from American Muscle 9/16, decided 11/16 was overkill for me.  The 9/16 are pretty solid and far and above the stock sleeve's.  Just my 2 cents worth.  Working on my front now and finally going back together.  Steve

Thanks Steve I'm going to use them as well, I already have a full set of new 9/16 tie rod ends....Just trying to figure out if I can use my centerlink off the 72 s6 kframe, it has the dropped center section so I think it's ok...

The 72 and earlier cars used pitman arms and idler arms with the studs for the centrelink pointing upward.  On the 73 and later cars they pointed downward.  You would have to use all of the parts from one group.  The only thing I don't know is if the idler arm mount on the K-frame stayed in the same location when they switched to the newer style.  I believe the 73 and later stuff clears most headers and oil pans better.

thank you guys... I'm going to use the stuff for 73-76, I checked today and the manual box I have is the small sector shaft...So it looks like I need a 73-76 Idler arm, and a 73-76 Manual pitman arm...

I just tightened up my pass side header and have about 1/2 inch clearence on one header tube.  Previous owner had beat header tube half closed.  With new headers and motor mnts have just enough header clearence.  Steve

Update, the 72 steering parts, DO NOT FIT on a 73 K-frame, well the idler arm anyway, the sleeve that runs through the idler arm is longer on the 72 so it will not fit in the mount with a washer on the ends....
