I used 3/16 th Aluminum plate for my backing. I used a orbital sander on it when I got it all cut out. It gave it a nice burnished finish. I was thinking that it may show finger prints on it so when I finished it I rubbed black moly grease all over it thinking it would fill the microscopic pores. Seems to work though.

Aluminim looks great, and I have some 1/8" that I can use, but I am pronbably going to make it out of steel so I can blend it in to the dash and make it look factory.

1/8" is to thin, it will vibrate or flex . My instrument panel is curved,on the ends, you just can't see it. I put it in a vise and pounded the $#!? out of it. Don't go to thin, it may be easier to bend but I don't think you will be happy with it. My installed pictures look like crap . My interior is all Black and it just Sucks all the light up. Kinda like a "Black Hole"

I know I thought the same thing. But 1/8" will not be very good . If your panel is mainly flat with curved ends I am Sure You can do it. Try 1/8" just for a Practice Run and see if you like it.

depending on what Aluminum it is, try annealing it before pounding it, I think it helps prevent it from cracking. I could be talking junk but I think I might have seen that on TV or read about it......looks good though!

Aluminum would only crack with sever bends or excessive working. Like back and forth. 3/16" is not easy to bend but you can do it.
