A few questions
« on: August 03, 2007, 10:45:05 PM »

I am trying to get my 72' Duster put together and I am coming across a few issues that are bringing questions to the table.

First of all I am planning on running a 10"-12" wide tire in the rear. I know that in order to accomplish this I am going to have to move the springs and at least mini tub the rear. I know that I have the option to go with the spring relocation kit. I have also found some information claiming that the offset bracket and hangers will allow for a 13ish" wide tire to be run. Is this true? I thought that the offset ones only gave .8" of additional clearance. Or is there some other option out there. If it comes to it I will move the springs to the frame rails. Also do the shocks still mount to the leaf perchs as they are stock when you relocate or offset them? I am considering using a 4 link suspension now as well or I may upgrade to this down the road.

Secondly, Do I need torque boxes? I am running a mild(500hpish) 440 and good 727. I am also running uscartool subframe connectors and a 12 point cage. I know I really don't need a 12 point with this set up but I am planning on making the car into more of a strip car in a couple years, so I figured that I would put it in while the car is apart and stripped. With this cage is there any need for torque boxes? Also will I be able to cut out the rear "V" supports that run from the rear deck to the floor behind the rear seat?

At last of all I am going to need to have a rear end narrowed. Where should I look to have this done? I know that Moser Eng. offers this for a reasonable price but do many local shops normally offer this service? I live in the Louisville, KY area. What kind of shops should I look at to have this done?

Thanks,
Zack

If that is your plan, put the springs into the longitudinal now.  Before you get the rear narrowed, decide on what wheel and tire you want to use and get the rear narrowed to fit your wheel/tire selection, not the other way around. I have a 72 duster with the offset pkg on it and I have 275-60-15 MT drag radials in it.  I have about 5/8" to the springs and enough room at the front and wheel lip.  How much tire do you really need?

That's what I was planning on doing. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. I just didn't know whether or not to move the springs in or offset them.

And as for a tire I would really like to run at least a 10"-11" wide tire.

I installed ladder bar suspension on my 72 Duster, I didn't cut the frames on the car. I did install mini tubs though.
I had my rear end shortened by 3' total is all and use a 12" wheel and 6" of back spacing.
So with stock frames I now have 15.5' of tire clearance. This allows me to put a 32 x 12.5 x 15 slick under the car.
When you talk about tire clearance you need to also look at sidewall clearance, not just tread width.

If you move the springs into the frame rails you will get similar results.

Good Luck and have fun building it.

First is this a Drag car or street? I am swaping my car over to Bills 4 bar system. My car is a street toy. I have a very good friend that lives out near Rough river.
