Topic: For the stereo people or electrical people (Read 549 times)

I am looking for a way to run a 10" car sub and amp in my room without having to run a battery charger and battery. I was thinking of running a small 1/3hp electric motor that will turn a small alternator and connect that to a capacitor then to the amp. Do you think that would work? or would it burn up the amp?
PS I know this aint car related but I thought I would ask.

My dad used an AC to DC convertor in his office with a 1985 dodge stereo. I think that is what you are looking for.

AC to DC converters arn't hard to make ether they can be cheaper then buying one if you have the stuff to make one. it's a simple circuit

All you need is a 12v power supply that is powerful enough for at least 1.5 times (twice would be better) the amps you will normally draw.

I've used a power supply out of an old computer case to power DC stuff; I'm crazy like that...  |

I haven't tried any newer computer power supplies, but I know the old ones wouldn't supply enough current to power a car stereo. But, it never hurts one to try it as they have lots of protection built in.

you would eb suprised on teh wattage u can get for pc's at my home pc i have a 525 watt Antec power supply, i knwo u can get them to the 800 watt range as well. |

sometimes when you run a car stereo system off of a convertor you get a background noise due to it not being grounded.

I can get a couple of 300W power supplies from some pcs that push about 40amps apiece , What if I wired them in parrallel?? Ive got a freind that is an electrician that could help me out.??

So how do you plan on feeding the amp? "Input" house strerio or car radio? You can actually get some inexpensive House stereo's with built in Amps of 100 Watts up to 1500 watts, and even Pre-amp Subs are not that expensive anymore, you would be amazed at the low base some of the pre-amps can produce. Just a note: my son tried to do what you are wanting to do and wound up under powering his amp and did in fact burn it up, Only about a 400 dollar lesson  But I'm sure he did'nt ask anyone how to do before he tried it either  so I showed him how he could take an Amp out of an old house stereo put it in a Banpass box with a pair of Punch 12" and connect it to a head unit ( stereo )and shake the roof off the house.....
