It depends on a couple of things. () Local laws in your area. (2) How tall you are and how your seating is set up. I'm rather short, so any scoop over 4 or 5 inches tall won't work well for me. The 1967 WO / RO style scoop on my 1966 Coronet 500 is about 2.5 inches tall, which makes it really easy to see over and allows me to feed fresh air directly to my carb. If your a taller person, you will be fine with a taller scoop I would guess. NOTHING is worse, or more dangerous than having a monster hood scopop on a street car. Its also kind of like having a HUGE wing on the back of a street car, what's the point? For a street car, I would just match the scoop to whatever clearance you need to clear your carb that's sticking up through your hood. Richard

Richard looking at your pics, what type of round foam did you use to seal the hood to the base of the air cleaner?

the current set up Im playing with: found a junker hood that someone had torched a hole in (and bolted on the worst looking ricer scoop on you ever saw) for next to nothing. cleaned that up nice and tight and viola. Im not thrilled with the look of the engine using the 2 inch 4-hole spacers but it did raise the scoop just enough to peek through the hole just perfectly. I may make a heat shield to cover the spacers a bit once I track down the metal. I'll undoubtedly have to put a torque strap on it as its fit so tight. not even sure that'll be enough.

Hi gt, The base plate is a fiberglass single 4 barrell Shaker base plate from Year One. The foam is made from a 6 foot piece of home air conditioning pipe insulation foam strip found at the Home Depot. It works out really well and comes with a split down the middle that has an adheisive strip on each side of the split. The foam is held in place by attaching it to small pieces of predrilled "L" brackets that were bolted to the base plate. The "L" bracket material was also bought at the Home Depot. The foam is heavy duty so it holds up well to the heat under the hood, but is also soft enough so that it doesn't scratch the paint.

Thanks Richard. I actually used a piece of water noodle board. It's about 6" wide. I cut it to 3" and glued it together to form a round piece and placed it on the bottom of my old 14" air cleaner base. It seals to the hood nicely and I am now using a 10" air filter. So now I am just waiting for my Hemi hood scoop to arive so that I can bolt it on.

Your set up looks good gt. Thanks for sharing. With our two different set ups, it should give other folks some ideas on doing their own. Richard

Here are some pics that I took. Very easy to do and inexpensive [img][/img] I really like this setup, I am going to have to try that myself. Although I am going to use a seal that will hold up a little better to the underhood heat. I am probably going to make it a 2 peice setup, with a top section mounted to the hood. for a flat seal.

Water noodle boards! When you go to Walmart in the kids toy section you will see 5 foot pieces of colored "noodles" looks like roll bar padding without the split and large inner hole in bright neon colors. They also come in flat 6" wide pieces in the same length (thats what I used), about $3 each. They are pool toys and float in the water as they are closed cell foam. Check them out next time you are in Walmart.

I would be weary of using noodles underhood, if it fell down and touched a manifold or header, they could catch fire.
And as far as effective hood scoops, go, if its good enough for a 9 second Super Stock, then its good enough for me and my 383. As a matter of fact, I am more worried about it ripping the hood off!

I am not sure if the noodle board will catch on fire or it will just melt. I will put the torch to a piece and see what happens. The foam should not fall out as when the hood closes it gets compressed a little bit to ensure a tight seal against the hood. The hood is steel so there should be little or no flexing. It will not fall out also because I glued down to the air cleaner base. The fire aspect is something to look into, when I get a chance.

Mynard. Nice set up. What is the purpose of the two holes in the base?

Hello: Thank you.
The holes are just to bleed off excess air that may be trapped at rear of scoop, and help proviide flow through the air pan.

flyboy, you touched on a very important issue about ripping your hood off. what are you going to use to hold your hood on? if you go with the dzuse ( ???spelling) clips, god forbid if you have a flame up under there. you`ll never get it off in time. i have a 5" scoop w/ those clips and i shit every time i think about this, like right now. i keep saying i`ll switch over to the hitch pins setup, oh, for about a year now , good luck
