Wiring problem, please HELP
« on: August 13, 2007, 06:29:33 PM »

I have a 67 barracuda convertible. I recently am having a problem with the parking lights coming on when I apply the brakes. Yes, the brake lights are coming on as well, but The parking lamps should not be. I have checked all the grounds that I can find, and I cant find any places where the wires could be crossed. SO if you could please tell me where the most popular problem area is located that would cause this, it would be of great help. Thanks.

Do the brake lights come on when you turn on the head lights? I would check the brake light bulbs. I ve seen the filaments in in dual filament bulbs blow and get crossed with the other filaments.

The tailights come on like there supposed to when the headlights are on, but the park lamps dont.  They all got new bulbs.

I experienced some posessed-like behavior in the lighting circuits once that turned out to be a bad fuse.

Old style flashers do weird things when a bulb or a fuse blows. Check the fuses and start replacing bulbs.

Well, I changed all the fuses and even cleaned the fuse box connections. But that didn't help my problem. Tommorrow, I am going to take the steering column apart, and see if it might be the turn signal switch. thanks bbd sign

Can't you just unplug the wiring harness to the steering column rather than take it apart?
As was mentioned earlier, try replacing the tail light bulbs or better yet, pull the tail light bulbs out and then hit the brakes and see if the parking lights still come on. (easy to try first) . Then if they are still coming on, try the harness next.

Do '67 have emergency flashers?  My '69 had a bad flasher switch that caused lights to come on that shouldn't and others to not work at all.  Unplugged it worked fine.

Replace the flasher first, its only a few dollars. I doubt the switch is bad, make that your last resort.
