67 dash into 73 Scamp
« on: August 15, 2007, 10:50:27 PM »

I am planning on installing a complete dash from a 67 Barracuda in a 73 Scamp.  I am wondering if anyone here has done this.  My question concerns the VIN tag on the dash.  I know you can get a replacement VIN through the state DMV.  The form for PA is here http://www.dot10.state.pa.us/pdotforms/mv_forms/mv-41.pdf.  That seems easy enough.  Does anyone know if how large the replacement VINs are?  Ways to secure them?  Any problems getting them?  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,
Craig

Just remove the VIN tag from the old dash and install it on the new one. The correct rivets are available if you think you need them.

You can grind the rivets off from the back and glue the VIN to the new dash.  Don't get a replacement VIN.  Keep the original one.

I thought it was illegal to remove a VIN.

It's only illegal to swap VINs between cars. Just put it back in the same location.

I've had many VINs verified by both authorized agents of the DMV, the DMV itself and local Cops.  The choices on the form for how the VIN is attached does not even come close to covering all the ways builders attached them.  Most of the people authorized to verify them don't have a clue. They also don't know about other areas on the chassis where the partial VIN should be. I'd bet it's pretty much the same in PA. With that said I have never tried to do anything goofey with a VIN but it's pretty easy to put a car on the road out here especially if it's in the system already or you have the pink.  For all you early A body owners (63-66) look at your VIN in the door jamb and tell me how it's attached.  I told the verifyer to check the "other" box and write in "swedged". I have never had a problem with the CA DMV no matter how screwed up my paperwork was.  They have a waiver form for everything.  The only time you have to dance is when it's an out of state title or no title.  I'd just attach the original VIN to the new dash.  You wouldn't be attaching a VIN to a different car just putting it back where it's supposed to be.
