Working with fiberglass
« on: August 19, 2007, 11:53:32 AM »

I am fitting my new AAR fenders and need to drill holes for emblems, cut, trim, etc.  For the holes, should I tape both sides before drilling?  Will this stuff splinter, or do anything strange on me?  The back edges around the doors need cleaned up, can I hit them with a file, sand paper, or??  Dart is a 68, and I would like to use the round marker lights, is it ok to use a hole saw?

Thanks!

Definately put good quality masking tape in the areas that you want to put holes in to prevent any splintering.

Fiberglass is alot like wood except it itches like hell. But like CraztDart said it will splinter. You can hit it with sandpaper to knock off any little splinters or such.It drills and cuts pretty good from my experience. If your going to  make alot of dust make sure you cover up good.If you dowse yourself down in babypowder first it will help keep the itch off of ya.Good luck

Thanks guys.  I am happy with the way it works.  I got a template made from my original GT fenders, and got the emblem holes positioned correctly.  Also, started fitting the drivers side, as there was some interference with the door.  Just some extra resin along the edges, knocked it off with a rasp quickly and cleanly.

Nope.  Nor does the lack of time to work on the car... I'll get it done someday, I hope.

Being in construction and learning the lessons over the years about insulation, always take a shower when your done starting with the coldest water you can. This tends to close your pores and allows the fiberglass to wash off.
