Weee! Quarter Panel Time!
« on: August 27, 2007, 04:08:17 PM »

Yippee I get to try my hand at quarter panel replacement tomorrow, I spent the better part of this morning and early afternoon burning up the motor in my 4" grinder trying to see how much rot I had to fix, well the rot holes are the minor issue, the major issue was the almost 2 inch deep bondo on the drivers quarter over the rear tire and in front of the wheelwell opening! Looks like the girl was T-boned and instead of fixing it right the just made a new quarter out of 2 inches of mud!! explode  The passenger side was patched in the rear quarter behind the wheelwell and they just used a piece of flat sheetmetal and made the curve of the panel in...yup you guessed it..Bondo.  explode  So off on a 4 hour trek to Connecticut tomorrow am to pick up a new drivers quarter and a passenger rear lower patch panel...And I hoped to have her in primer by this weekend

Aint it fun?  Popcorn  I dunno about you, but these quarter panel rerplacements are scarin the carp outta me. I keep hearing horror stories of warping so i'm slowly tacking opposite sides in order to keep the heat buildup down

To keep the heat and warping to a minimum I'm going to tig the new panels on, I'm planning to butt weld the seams and if I can get the fit close enough I'll fuse them on with the tig torch and not have any grinding to do after, just a skim of filler to cover the weld, fusing without filler rod will leave a slightly concave seam.....

i cant wait to see pics of that.  how much do you think you can you tig a 1/4 at a time without warping it?  1/2"? i know the aftermarket stuff is like paper and will warp easy compared to the stock stuff.  one day im going to build m ypowerbulge hood and i want to tig it all together.

Ok boys and girls, the quarter panel project is moving along, yesturday I drove 290 miles round trip to AutoBody Specialties in RI to pick up 2 new quarter panels, then off to the welding shop for 1/16" Tungsten, collets and nozzles for the Tig torch, that and errands with the family ate up yesturday, Today I hit it hard, sanded the old quarter to bare metal, trimmed the new driver quarter for fit (Those are Cleco's holding it in the pics) then I noticed that the very back tip of the quarter where the tail panel and quarter come together doesnt look quite right so back out comes the DA sander, low and behold that corner has been smashed and repaired in the past by some ham fisted jackass who I wouldnt call a "Hobbyist" , much less a body guy, now I'm new to body work but not to sheetmetal work, I litterally was able to get the corner banged back out close to it's normal shape with a body hammer and a screwdriver! All they bothered to do was make a new corner out of bondo!!!  Frustrated  So now we're (Tracy and I) taking a lunch and beer break and then it's back out to the garage to start hacking off the old quarter and tacking the new one on...Couple pics...

So I think when the side dropped to the floor I threw up in my mouth just a little bit.... Shocked  Thats the rough cut, now I'll trim the opening to the lines, spray the rusty bits with Rust Encapsulator after I wire brush it and on to the tacking...

Thanks guys, well I ran out of steam for today, 9 hours is enough, I got the opening cut to exact size, but I need to roll it back outside to hit the rusty spots with the wire brush on the 4" grinder but I'm out of daylight, Starting fresh in the morning again, the plan is to have that side all tacked up and maybe get started on the solid welding. duster  Then comes a repeat performance on the passenger side! Luckily it looks ALOT less crusty than the drivers side from what I can see of the backside of it...

real nice job, i've been following your progress, and it looks good. take all the time you need, & then sit & think about it some more. doing the same [ sorta ] thing myself, the worst you can do is to start over, & try it again, sounds like experience don't it?

Yeah it's not terrible, I cleaned off all the scale, and as much of the surface rust as I can, washed it down with Por 15's metal ready (Phosphoric acid), filled the holes in the wheel house, and I'm working on patching the inner rocker as it was rusted out all the way, but for 2 days I've been plagued by tool problems, first my 4" grinder literally went up in smoke, then my air body saw came apart, fixed the saw for a while but it gave up the ghost last night totally, my air line filters and moisture traps were'nt hooked up yet so I was pumping water through the tools, a fresh cutoff wheel exploded on me last night after the air saw broke into pieces, so I said enough's enough...Today has been spent plumbing the air line the right way, searching out a new body saw which sucked I might add, Home Depot discontinued theirs, Sears doesnt carry them anymore, nor Lowe's, I finally found one at a local tool shop...Now I'll try to get the rocker finished and maybe spray the Por 15 tonight after dinner...

Thanks guys!...Yeah, Auto Body Speciaties is where I got the quarters from, Auto Rust Technicians has they're place and I cant speak of their actual repair work but from what I've seen of their parts, the frame caps and such are nothing more than a band aid for rust, their torque boxes look good though...motorhead446 as soon as I start the tigging I'll post pics of it..The heat control is so much better with tig I'm expecting excellent results, 1/4"-1/2" at a time LOL...

Ok folks got the quarter tacked into place, word of advice, rough trim the new panel, cleco or screw it over the new panel and do the final trimming through both pieces, it'll save you ALOT of trouble trimming, the passenger side will be done that way..That being said it was fairly uneventful, tig is definately THE way to go for bodywork if your working with clean steel and have a good fit etc...The last pic shows one of the advantages of tig, control and a very small heat affected area, these tacks are 100% penetration, most done without filler wire and the heat area is smalled than the eraser on a pencil...
