Would it be wise to place a drain plug and fill area on the housing?  If so, is this something fairly easy to do?

There is a fill plug on the carrier. I have a drain on my 8 3/4. It certainly makes the job a ton neater.

There is?  I just tore it out of a Newport and have not looked it over.  But to make things easier I can weld in a bung and add a plug?  I think that is the correct terminology... Dunno

Make it real easy on yourself and put the plug right in line with your ring gear and make it pretty big so you can also inspect the condition of the gear through it.

The fill hole is in the 3rd member, not the housing.

I told him that. He still wants to put a fill hole in the housing.
