Propane torch to soften, putty knife to scrape, Goof-off (or most solvents) to remove residue.

Ummmm....I suggest a heat gun, rather than something with an open flame.  Doing mine that way, and the "residue" comes right off with silica sand at high velocity.

If you're more comfortable with a heat gun and sandblasting, that's fine. The factory undercoat isn't that volatile and it takes little to soften it. I even tested an open flame on Goof-Off saturated undercoat. Nothin'. Take appropriate safety precautions.

I just did this a couple months ago. I used a MAPP gas torch and scraped it. Then went over it with a grinder with a bristle disc on it. Time consuming but not that hard. Have fun.

The magical way is your checkbook or credit card.  Grin

Pay someone else to do it.

If I had to do it again, I would pay a sandblaster to do it for me. That was one messy, dirty job.

Hey, here is an idea, call Mike Rowe!

I was in your boat a few months ago. Decided to take off the undercoating off. First tried to do it myself. After 1 night I decided it wasn't worth doing it myself. It is now at the sandblaster, he is just working on it in his spare time. From what he has done, it looks awesome. Better yet, he said that when he is done, he is going to paint the bottom of the car.  Cheers Cheers One less thing for me to try and find some time to do. The way I look at it is pay a professional. It's just money   \/][ \/][

High detergent Dextron II transmission fluid worked on mine.  Everywhere the trans fluid had leaked on the undercarriage, it had softened the factory undercoating to the point that it would easily come off with a steel putty knife.  Don't know if it would work fast enough if you just applied it by hand.

I used a citrus based HOUSE HOLD type paint stripper and it worked great! Never even touched the factory paint below, softened the under coating and allowed 90% to scraped off with a putty knife. I then used mineral spirits and steel wool to clean off any residue and to get into tight areas. Good luck, no matter what you do it's ALOT of work.

the only way is a propane torch and scraper except i used map gas sold right next to the propane cause it burns hotter then once all scraped off you use a 3m style scotvh brite pad and kerosene and a little elbo grease , then sand blast and put in sealer like ppg dp50lf a great epoxy primer that i use and trust very much to prevent corrosion

good luck the job sucks and wear a resperator as undercoating produces nasty fumes I know if done 3 cars like this now.

I spoke to the sandblaster over the weekend, he was done with the sandblasting, looks awesome, there is no way that a putty knife and wire wheel could have done the same. Another thing is that it will find and clean all the rust out too. He said for the blasting he was around $700, he also did the engine compartment and wheelwells front and back. Some may think it seems like alot, but how much is every weekend and night for 3 months worth? I'm pretty happy with the guy so far.
