Radiator support panel removal for better access?
« on: September 11, 2007, 05:58:28 PM »

I am looking to create a removable radiator support panel to allow better engine installation.

Can any one show pics of how it should / could be done?

Thanks!

I'm not sure that I'd do that. Maybe just think about sectioning the upper tie bar. The whole support not being welded on will cost you a lot of sagging issues.

Maybe make a lower section out of some rectangular tubing to strengthen up the front of the car and make only the top half removeable. I'm considering something like that for my car.

You're talking about just making the top part removable, right? If done properly it should not be a problem. FYI, Mopar has used removable radiator crossmembers since at least 2000. The engine swap on my Durango with removable crossmember was the easiest thing I've ever done. No need to remove the hood, you don't need to jack the hoist up to the rafters, and you won't need to angle the snot out of the motor to weasel it into position.

Actually seems like a lot of work for nothing.  I put the 383 and 727 in my duster by myself inside a standard garage with a rented cherry picker and an engine tilter.  Probably took 20 minutes, maybe less.  The key is the engine tilter. Think I paid $30 for mine. I'd try it this way before you start hacking up your core support.

i agree with farmington, get a tilter and your good to go. if for some reason you actually have to cut the top of the rad support out i'd weld that rascal back in!

I had to cut mine because the stupid hydraulic cylinder was bad on the cherry picker. Welded that sucker back in though. Cool
