anyone ran from the cops in a dart lately?
« on: September 16, 2007, 04:04:47 PM »

I DID! Just a few nights ago i bought a 440 from a buddy of mine. He and i took it to my house in his truck and when we got to the house i was showing him my 69 dart, although its not much it is a warmed over 318 w/ j heads a 484 purple shaft 750 holley over an Edlebrock Air Gap RPM and a 3.91 Suregrip out back, It is how ever enough to loose the 5-0 apparantly... I took my friend for a around the block and up the highway. When we started i told him "i dont know how much gas ive got but, what the hell lets go anyway"... how many times have we all done that? After terrorizing the Neighbor hood i said im sure we are getting low lets head back... on the way back i came to a 4 way stop that i just didnt want to stop at... no one was coming i could see that, except in the direction opposite of me... Oh well i thought whats the chances its a ? Im going anyway!.... LOW and Behold.... sure enough... as i passed him i seen him jam the breaks and turn around... Hear We GO! moon I hammered back on my B&M shifter dropped to second and hammered down! What was i thinking??? hammer by the time i hit 80-90 i was coming up to my subdivison entrance, i locked down all 4 tires and slide in like i was a stunt driver for the Dukes of Hazzard! My buddy yells kill the lights! So i do as im going through the gears he yells again hes coming over the hill, stay off the breaks! I pulled onto my road my headers scrubed in on a bump and i hauled ass for my backyard, i pulled in and cut the car off, ran inside, and tried to clamp my heart that was beating out of my chest down! total chase time maybe 1-2min! 1-2min ill never forget behind the wheel of my MOPAR

Not sure about where you are, but here in California they can nail you with a felony for that.

along time ago , when i was still living with my parents , before i was married , would have been in around early 80's but my second 69 Dart i took the 340 out and put in 440 little head work , big valves, 11.5 to 1 , 550 lift mechanicl camshaft , headers , nothing fancy but worked well , i had been with my girlfriend at the time and had gone to bed , she was sleeping well , and i wasnt so my thought was i will go visit some firends , they were working on car in the garage , it was a short drive about 10 miles , and a nice straight road , no problem  , i get ther visit , they finish up , couple  of beers and i am off , back home it was about 3-4 in the morning nice straight road , no traffic , nothing but farmland and few houses and two intersections , no stop lights , beautiful night windows down , tunes on , so why not take advantage of this lovely setting , click on the high beams and peddle to the wood , sweet little ride speedo is buried tach is at about 7000 , i go passed first intersection and noticed headlights , no problem , if it is a cop he will never catch me , well he didnt have a chance i saw lights flashing way back never let up and said a little prayer ,"oh baby dont fail me now" i had no points left on my license and was awaiting trial date for speeding ticket , so what the hell , bessy got me home and back to bed i go , the next day i go to the lake , meet up with some firend from the night before , and in front of my girlfriend , they ask if i was involved in a car chase on my way home , so explained the situation to her she wasnt happy , then police cars come rollin in , driving up and down , they come over and tell me i am under arrest do the search and all handcuffs, so my girlfriend says ,he was with me all night , and my firends tell them and we just got the tranmission fixed and back in the car first thing this morning , so in the end i was let go because of the fast talking from everyone else and only spent 30 min in the cruiser , at the beach with probably 500 people looking on to see what was happening , and ended up taking everyone out for supper , there choice , my treat , i am sure the ticket would have been cheaper , but no slammer time

Well let me blow the dust off 1 of my chases, my friend T and I was leaving school one night, stopped  at Exxon near house and gassed up. Pulled out and straighten her up and made her holler and just as I crested a slight hill ( still in it) I see cop car coming my way toward me , so I lift and look in my rear view mirror, dam cop turn into the Exxon we had just left, just for a min we signed, until we heard that unmistakeable sound of a cops car, 4 barrel opening up and looking in rear view mirror seeing him coming off that Exxon lot at us. So I stump it ,  the  next street coming up was mine ,so I hang a slidding turn onto my street and  4 houses down was mine , we made it into the drive way before cop turned on my street, I shot up my drive under carport. I shut it off and took my feet off brake and we leaned in toward each other below seat. We could now hear that cop into  that 4 barrel coming down my street, just as he past my house he locked them breaks, my house sat on the corner of a street that tee'ed into mine so he didn't see me in front or down that other street, thats why he stopped, but now we heard him throw that sucker in rev and pull into the drive behine us. We still leaned over in car and hear him starting to run taggs, so we raised up, and got out. they got hands on guns , we raise ours, This female officer lit into us, until she got a good look at T, , then said boy ,what the hell you doing in that car, you know better. Then we got a even worst ass chewing, but was let go without a ticket.   Whew         Whew             !nanr

a few of mine sound similar...
but drum brakes on a 69 chevelle dont do many sideways slides..
i made it to my buddies back yard in the nick of time...glad no one was comming
cause my brake fade...i was mid intersection before i could turn and put the hammer back down.

a few yrs back i had a 73 scamp...super clean....like new.. the 340 duster body wasnt done yet (and still isnt madwife) so i put the whole running gear in the scamp.warm 340,727,8.75 with 3.91''s
one night coming home..no cars around ..i was sitting at the light...so i decided to test my reaction time when it turned green....so i hammer it...i only go maybe 60 feet when a cop in the other lane on the other side of a devided hwy....was looking for speeders...
so he hears me...and hammers it..well his rear wheels where in the dirt so it took a few seconds to actually hit pavement...
he turned away from me to manuver around the concrete devider..
this was just enought time for me to..make the top of the crest over the hill...
so i stay iin it looking to beat him to the turn before he crests the hill...
i made it...and hit my lights off...
i watched him sit in the intersection looking for which way to turn...
a few turns and i was gone....
now ....this part i have to add..
my car was peanut butter tan with a tan top and white interior and black steelies and dogdish's
a vey young ..very meek, Red headed  teenager who worked atmy local Advance autoparts ..
had the very same car except it was a 73 dart same color and condition...but virtually the same car..same vynl top...but with et slots..on it.
the vey next time i stopped in with my scamp..he asked me" if i had run from a cop lately..?"
i said yes....
he said a cop came to the store....blaming it on him....mistakenly due to the similar cars...now this was only a few yrs ago..so a car that old..really  stood out..
no issues..he talked his way out of it....i guess..
and on a side note....i smoked alot of cars on the street with that scamp....low 13's/high 12's times.
he said..the guys at school (high school) gave him lots of props for having such a fast car...
only it was my car that did all the beating....
his was a stock 318 with dauls...but he said I gave him quite a reputation..
cheapst.

It's dumb but we do it anyway without thinking....

A few years ago in my 70 duster (warm 360, x-heads, comp solid .495", 727, 3.91, good for low 13's) I was taking some county roads on the way home from a friends house at night. I wasnt going very fast, but i was sliding around corners, just having fun. There is a cop who lived on that road and he was evidently just getting home too. I saw headlights and didnt realize it was him when he was slowing down for his driveway. Well, I blow past him and see him turn around real quick in my mirror. He hit his lights and floored it. Luckily, there was a dirt road around a corner and I took it and went just as fast as I could (duster wasnt painted yet) I guess I went just fast enough. I'm lucky the dust settled before He could find me. I found the closest paved road and drove to the house as fast as I could. I parked the car and stayed off that road for a few months!

Not a chase, but a funny story:
I was driving my dad's diesel in high school and burned the tire (open diff) across a stoplight. there was a cop to my left sitting at the light and he immediately turned on his siren and lights and pulled over the guy in the lane next to me!!! I guess only my right wheel was spinning and since I had no traction, the guy next to me took off faster, so the cop assumed he was the one burning out! I got a good laugh out of that one!

Not to veer from the topic, but I had the same thing with an 02 Yamaha R1.  I was on the interstate in the middle of the night and was in a hurry.  The bike limits at 187 MPH and right as I was closing in on 185, I noticed a highway patrol sitting in the ditch.  Thought about hitting the brakes but decided to stay in it.  The lights faded little by little, but when I got home I had to local sheriffs sitting in my driveway.  No proof it was me, they said all the hipo had on camera was a blurred light and some blue farings... Got quite the lecture but no tickets.

Let's see..... in the past I've outrun cops in a 70 Charger 383/auto, 70 Dart Swinger 440 sixpak, 70 Roadrunner Superbird doing about 140 mph, 69 Mustang, 85 Yamaha RZ500.....ummmm I think there is more but I can't remember right now. Yes I'm a bad boy and I don't condone it.

I just got caught in my 69 Satellite convertible running a red light. I haven't had a ticket in years. I'm going to try and fight it.

Almost got popped years back - a pack of GS11, CBX, KZ1000, etc. come rolling through around midnight at 80mph (in a 40) and I thought I'd fall in at the back of the pack. Keep in mind I am on a KZ550.... The locals (who knew me well from the 302ed Pinto) gave chase. The big bore guys banged it down one or two and took off - I tried, but ended up taking a railroad access road at around 40mph with the lights off. I sat there for abotu an hour until I got the nerve to start it up amd ride the tracks home. Mashed tank, trashed leathers and helmet, missing pretty much everything on the right side of the bike. First and last time I pulled a stunt like that.

My Dad used to F with the Woodland Park CO Police all the time. He had a Belvedere and a Fury, said his 440's were faster than everything but Motorola.

there has been a time or two on my fzr 1000 that i have disobeyed the speed limit , most of the times i got home and parked before , i got caught , but on two occasions , they did eventually find me at work , both times escorted out , needless to say the judge was not happy , 300 kph cost 2500 and 6 months  no license, no jail time , 2nd one cost me 14 days  2000 dollars , and six month no license as well , so no it is a really nice stroked and bored plant stand and dust collector.

not in a dart but my son  ran about six monts ago, they caught him after about 4 miles.  charged with felony eluding, endangerment of a police officer, speeding 132 in a 55,  cost $3800 in fines and lawyer fees, 10 days in jail. lost license for 18 months, lost his job  because of no license.  he now realizes how stupid it  was to run.  it all started off as speeding he was doing 68 in a 55

In the Eighties I out ran a cop in a Caprice with my all stock '65 signet rag top with a 273 2bbl 904 and 9" drums. I was in a residential nieghboorhood and got a good jump! The cop was really pissed when he ran into me again about a month later when they were called to a party that was a little too loud. I was not driving at the time but he told me that if I drove that car again that nite I was going to jail. All in all I eluded the cops at least 6 times without being caught but that was a long time ago and I would never do anything that dumb again. Now if I could only learn not to speed I would be OK. Currently under suspension for 108 in a 55

Those are some crazy stories.

The only running I have ever done and will ever do, is when  I ran from my parents when they were giving me woopens for getting into to trouble at school or bringing home bad grades.

Thats it. Man I hatted those belts and switches.  Frustrated Frustrated Frustrated Frustrated Frustrated Madd Madd Madd

I've watched too many episodes of Cops and saw too many people take a beatin' for running from the cops.  I got busted one night prob 9 years ago for 73 in a 45, cop thanked me for stopping for him, saying I probably could have lost him, he only gave me a $50 ticket.

Then one night after leaving work (there had been a person in a blue car try to hit someone walking in a nearby parking lot), of course I'm driving a loud blue car, and six cops pull me over with guns drawn at me.  when I stopped I just put both hands out the window and explained where I was coming from.  After having that many guns on me I doubt I'll ever run from them.

Let me add a little to this from the other side.  In my 13 years as a cop, I've had way too many people go high-speed when I've tried to stop them. Some get away, mostly because we don't chase for traffic violations anymore, some get caught, and about 30% end up crashing out. One particular night my partner and I stop this guy for picking up a hooker. As we walk up to the truck the hooker jumps out and he frams it to the floor and is gone before we can get back to our car. Well about an hour late we see him again and do a u-turn on him. He again takes off and goes flying down a dirt road. We back off cause the dust is so thick you can't see 10 feet in front of you. As we follow his tire tracks you can see where he started to fishtail, then you see where the tires leave the road and then we come upon his truck on the roof with no one inside. We call for a K-9 to see if we can track the guy but I end up finding him about 5 minutes later. He is face down in the ditch where he landed after being thrown from the vehicle. The paramedics worked him but he was DEAD when he got to the hospital. There are several more stories like this with more tragic result that I could relay but I'll spare you the chastisation. Running from the cops is NOT cool, it's NOT fun, it IS stupid. You could kill yourself, someone else or one of the men or women who are out there to protect you. I'm sure there are some of you who have issues with cops, and I'll be the first to say that I work will some real *$@#! But nothing is worth your life and or freedom. Don't be stupid. My 2 cents.
