Topic: One wire alternators for Mopar (Read 529 times)

I have read much about one wire alternators for Mopars , but am still unsure about the whole wiring up of it. I know when using a 1 wire, most are internally regulated, so no need for a regulator. Does anyone have a schematic of a wire diagram for this setup? Any help is appreciated. Thanks from an electrically challenged old school member.

I believe all you need is one wire from the alternator to the battery or the starter depending on preference. The will excite the alternator on startup and then switches to be the charge wire while the car is running.

It's the easiest thing you will do on a car. The alternator has 1 post on the back. Just run 10 gauge wire to the positive battery terminal and you're done. The alt. will charge the battery directly through the positive post.

Has anybody wired up there old Mopar alternator to make it a single wire or is it easier to just purchase a sinlge wire version, One's I saw are around $200. Kind of step. Hate to put a chevy alternator on my Mopar.
Thanks 5258

What tells the alternator to start charging? Are you talking about the internal regulated alternator?

Chrysler charging systems SUCK! Even when converted to one wire they don't perform very well. Just go to a delco or denso style and be done with it!

Madelectrical has a good article on how to use the Toyota denso alternator wth remote voltage sensing. On a Mopar electrical system, you would want to place the remote sense wire at the positive battery cable post on the starter relay for best performance. I plan on converting my Dart in this way over the winter.

thats exactly what i did with a delco, voltmeter stays rock steady. you won't regret doing that upgrade 75dart440

I took my alternator to a local Starter/Alternator shop and they changed it from a 3 wire to a single wire, it cost me around $30, plus the new larger gauge wire to run back to the battery. Easy fix, alot less wires and it works fine.

On AR Engineering's website they have a bracket to mount a Pathfinder alternator on a big block. My rebuilder says that's a bulletproof unit. Think about it. How many electric options do newer SUV's come with??

The only thing with the AR setup is that the toyota alt. is only 60 amps. That will power 2 electric cooling fans and a big electric fuel pump and not much else. For a electric fan cooled and electric fuel pump car with some other stuff you need about 90-100 amps or the alternator will be charging at idle. I'm going with the GM style alt.

I'm running the Powermaster GM CS style one wire. Ran a 6 gauge wire to the starter relay and done. Puts out 65 amps at idle and 108 at cruise speed. Runs the twin fans, fuel pump, lights, radio with volt meter sitting at 14 volts idling. I joke with the Chevy guys that the car didn't have any rust until I put that chevy alternator on it.

That's the same alt. I just ordered. Good to hear that it works well.

Are you guys talking about the CS130? That alternator makes great power, but it's prone to rear bearing failure from heat. There's an aftermarket housing called the Iceberg Kit. I had it in an 80 Trans Am. The Iceberg housing required major work to the 90 serpentine brackets I was running, but it would clear just fine on a Mopar type bracket.
