I Need To Bring Back The Leaf Spring Questions Again?
« on: October 01, 2007, 02:26:04 AM »

OK........................I finished up the rear drum to disk break swap this weekend..........finally  \/][!
It looks good and operates very well.
The one item that I noticed before doing the brake swap was that the adjustable snubber I put onto the differential assembly a few years back was adjusted all the way down and the floor pan was sitting on the rubber mount. so apparently my leaf springs are pretty much shot.
I installed the old stock snubber and it is working well except that the back of my Dart sits much lower now.

Getting onto my problem and question's

I found when I was testing the Dart out. I noticed that when I made any type of a turn that I could hear a clanking noise Dunno
I pulled it into the garage and lifted the back end up and noticed that the drivers side rear shock had paint removed off of it Huh
I noticed before I did all the work to it that there was a small amount of paint that had been rubbed off, but now it is a much bigger area.
It looks to me like the shock is either to close to the gas tank or the exhaust pipe. I think that the cause of the noise is the shock rubbing or clanking against either the exhaust pipe or the gas tank. I also checked to see if the axles had any play in them or were binding, and there not. Whew

1.)   Has anybody ever had this come up?
I know I need to get some new leaf springs or something to replace the old ones. I like Bills RMS rear setup that he has but unfortianately I lack the funds to purchase it at this time.
2.)   I would like to get some exact replacements for mine, or get them rebuilt, if it is possible to re-arch them?
3.)  Anybody know where I can get a drivers side leaf with 6 fulls and 1 half and a passenger side with 6 fulls and 2 halfs? My leaf springs are from an original Big Block A-body.
4.)  Or can I get away with some XHD 5 leaf springs?

Sorry for being so long winded Blah Blah Blah

Thanks,
Shawn

I'm a B body head, so I'll only be able to offer this. There's a spring place on Long Island that I've used for years. They build whatever you want. If you walked in with your springs, they'd duplicate them. They have blueprints for damn near anything. I've bought springs from them for my Charger, I converted a run of the mill 80 T/A to WS6 specs, countless Ford vans and pickups... What I'm saying is any good spring shop should be able to give you what you want. I guess if I were doing a Dart I might use S/S springs with an adjustable front hanger to adjust the height.

You should be able to find a spring shop down there. Take your springs to them and have them build what you need. I have found that a re arch just does not last.

I was thinking about Super Stock springs. They are the 5 leaf, leaf springs. I can get them from Mopar Performance through Earnhardts for $120.00 each. What about the adjustable front hanger? I'm not planning on racing my Dart It is simply put...... to stomp on it once in awhile and take it to some shows & shines or something along that line.

Dave I did find 1 shop here in Az that may do the springs to the way I want them but it is a 4 wheel drive shop, I'll need to call them on Tuesday. I do have a call into www.jimsautoparts.com to see if the leafs that they advertise on there website are actually like the original equipment that came with the Big Blocks from the 60's

The reason I mentioned the adjustable hanger was in case the rear was too high, you could move it down a little.

I orderd the Super Stock springs today................I must have called 12 different places and they all told me that they were on back order and they don't know when they will get'em in.
Even the new XHD springs are on back order \/][ ..............I made it a point of asking for both sets of part #'s
S/S springs part # pass P-3412002 drivers P-3412003
XHD springs part # pass P-4510268 drivers P-4510269

I did find a dealership in CA. that had 1 S/S set left and they are shiping them to me today, I should have them no latter than Thurs.
Thanks for all the help and info.

You might want to get new front hangers with the second hole to lower the back of the car. You could also try some lowering blocks. The superstock springs will rais the back of your car about 2 inches. Just an FYI.

Dave,
Thanks for the heads up. I will see how it sits with just the S/S springs and if it is higher than I wan't it, I will get the new front hangers.
