mega block
« on: October 01, 2007, 12:47:07 PM »

How much do these cost and where do you guys get yours? Is the 400 main size the same as the 440? If not can you get a mega block with the 400 main size. I have heard some things about oiling probs with the big block mains, any info on this would be great.

Around 3000$, if they are available. Don't know if they are yet. No 400 main size, B and RB blocks from the factory have got different main sizes. The oiling system in BB's is very good, and can be made even better very easily.

don't even bother  with the mopar performance mega block...world products are selling a real nice piece.{that's whose casting for Ray Barton}......it's machined better...has less core shift...and is a little cheaper......on any real big block a external oiling system is the key for surviving high rpm.....400/383 main size is 2.625... & 440/426 {hemi&none} is 2.750

Actualle, mopar performances new "megablock" is the very same block. They have just recently started casting them, and MP has a lot of back orders and their crate engine program, so I don't know about the availability, until they've got all the back orders handled.

hughes sells that block, but so do many others. Casted by Koleno, machined by Roush. It has some nice feautres, and is perhaps the best iron block available. Aluminum is nice in a way, it's light and it's repairable. But it also moves around, and makes less power than a good rion block. That's why they use iron in Pro Stocks too.

How much power loss are you talking?  I have been thinking of going to an aluminum block.

I really can't say. It also depends of, what you compare it to. If to a factory production block, maybe nothing, but if to a race block, it may be a different story. There is also some other factors involved, the aluminum blocks can withstand more "hit", and stay together. I have an aluminum blocked wedge, and made 781 hp with it on pump gas some seven years ago, so the difference mustn't be enormous, at least at that power level. But I have never gotten very good leak down % out of it, and they tend to change somewhat. + since they expand way more, I'm currently actually in a situation, where I should adjust my valves everytime when the engine gets in to operating them, and then loosen the adjustment before the next start. That's because, if I adjust the valves to the recommended .014/.020" lash, there isnät any left when the engine cools down. That also has a thing or two to do with the rocker design, but that's another story. Cheesy

Wow, that sounds like a lot of work.  I was looking at it from the repairable and weight savings standpoint.  I never though about the changes to valve lash, that sounds like I would be asking for inconsistency in my drag car since the engine temp varies from round to round.

JYRKI - I'd be curious to know who's block that was and, since you are saying it was sevfen years ago, have they addressed this issue or are the no longer in business?

I've had two MP mega blocks and after this happened (see pic) I decided it was the end of racing if it happened again. So I bought a KB aluminum block so I could fix it if it happens again. Plus they are about 15 minutes from the house so that doesn't hurt either.
One question I do have is that I have noticed the new race blocks come without lifter bores. As in, you get to have them bored your own bloody self?!?! Are there that many variations in what we all do that this became necessary??? To me it is a pretty petty thing to saddle us with a more expensive costing block that doesn't have this already done. I could see it as an option, but not as a norm.

I don't know about this problem he's having with valve adjustment. There are 2 Supercompers at my local track that don't have this problem. Iron will hold the heat longer for more consistency when you have lots of time between rounds. In my mind, the only reason NOT to go Aluminum is $.
