Question on my mopar starter relay
« on: October 01, 2007, 07:14:48 PM »

Here goes my problem, I am wiring a car from scratch , all original wiring is gone, its a 73 Duster with 400 big block and auto tranny, I am using the basic starter panel , Toggle Ignition switch, Push button starter switch, mopar starter relay. Now here's what keeps happening when I go to start car and this is the wiring I have , 12 volt positive lead running to Toggle Ignition switch ,out of Ignition switch to Push Button switch and also feed my ignition circuit( Mallory Hyfire Box), out of push button switch to terminal (I) on starter relay, terminal (G) on starter relay runs to the nuetral safety switch on trans (which I take is grounded somewhere in trans somehow to complete relay circuit), terminal (S) on starter relay runs to starter solonoid, terminal(B) is the battery positve on the starter relay. Now I have gone thru 2 relays so far, when I start car it fires up and runs, once I turn the Ignition switch off the car stops running, now when I go to start it up again , I have nothing, now at the relay on terminal(I) I have 12.7 volts with push button pushed in , but still no turning over of starter, now if I put screwdriver across terminals (S) & (B) on starter relay the motor will start ,of course the Ignition switch is turned on also. Any ideas , any way to eliminate starter relay all together, or is this not recommended, just trying to get basic starter circuit like is used in race cars

It sounds like you did everything right to me. I wouldn't run without a relay. All the load from the starter solenoid will be directly on your start button. Try a ford type slave solenoid instead of the factory type.

Use the relay. If you have 12v on "I" you must not have ground on "G" if the relay is not working. Instead of jumping the "S" and "B", jump "I" to "B" (makes the relay operate). Check that park is solid and that you didn't install an early NSS in a late trans or vice-versa.

So If I take "G" on starter relay and go directly to a frame of car for a good ground , relay should then work, so that would tell me possibly the nuetral safety switch could be bad or not getting a good ground all the time at the neutral safety switch, because the car did crank over and start once, I also remember the harness that plugs into the nuetral switch was undone when I bought car and before I tore out all the wiring to rewire whole car(car was really rigged when it came to the wiring when I bought it, plus there was melted wires on old wiring, thats why I started from scratch with anew wiring kit for car)

Yes, that is correct. Make sure you are in the car, though.
