Has anyone welded a sump in their tank?

What all did you have to do? Did you have to put tank sealer in it? Buying a new tank...

I welded a sump in my tank.
Did not use any sealer, but it couldn't hurt.

WE SEND OUR TANKS TO A RADIATOR SHOP AND HAVE THEM PRESSURE CHECKED FOR LEAKS AND THEN THEY FLOW SOLDER ON ALL THE WELDS. JUST A LITTLE EXTRA INSURANCE

I did it once to an old tank. It was very difficult to weld. The solder is a great idea as is the sealer. Why not get an Aeromotive or some other tank with a sump in it already? Also, I mentioned in another thread, a sumped tank isn't the best idea on a street car. They hang pretty low and the fittings are susceptable to damage.

Something I used to see people do is just skip the sump and weld a fitting into the bottom/lowest point of the tank.  Anyone try doing it this way?

I want to keep the stock tank but i need a bigger fuel outlet. No fuel cell, she wants regular car-type stuff anf that means filling the gas through the gas cap.  ::)Putting afitting in the tank sounds like a decent idea. Is that something will pass inspection at the track?

It's actually not a mopar, it's my wife's 69 Mustang but you guys know more than anyone on the Mustang boards.

Someone must make a 1/2" pickup that fits in the stock pickup location. I'd do that.

its also not terribly hard to replace the original pickup tube with a half inch one.

The Ford is like a Mopar with the piece that fits into the big hole in the tank. The fuel pickup is brazed in there. Maybe I could get a new one brazed in? Or get some fittings?

You could absolutely make it yourself with a bulkhead fitting. Put a hardline on the inside with a flare on the end to connect to the fitting. I did that on my brother's car.

That is a great idea, I did the whole bending up a new one and brazing it in.  Did you use a tube to flair adapter with the bulkhead?

I had read a post on here not too long ago that someone is making a 1/2" pickup sending unit for the stock tank, just can't remember who.

Just use a JIC bulkhead fitting. 37 degrees on both ends. The only hard part is flaring the hardline to 37 degrees. I have a flaring tool.

i think I will try that instead of sumping it. What do you use to seal the fitting? Some teflon washers or something?

I think Earl's sells washers with O rings bonded to the inside diameter.
