Hey guys,I just bought to Garrett T56 Turbos for my 383/496. A few questions for you experienced builders: I have billet main caps, do I need a girdle as well? My 906 heads are ported with Ferrea valves and hardened inserts, will they hold up with say 15psi boost? As for fueling I though of using a race demon set up for blow through, is there a fuel injection system that will provide more satisfying performance?(but not more than $1000) If I go with the carb, will a Aeromotive A1000 work? and what would ideal fuel pressure be? I am planning on getting her to make 800hp, the car is a '68 Cuda, minitubbed, 'caged etc. Will see some street action.  Thanks!

http://www.csucarbs.com  this who you need to talk to about a blow thru carb.  If we were going to go with a carb when we turbo my son's Dart 383...this is who we would use. Out of the box and ready to go.
Instead we will be using a EFI system...that we are putting together ourselves...

I'd go with the blowthru carb.  Cheaper and will work great.  The A1000 will be more than enough.  Probably run 7.5 to 8 fuel pressure.  The heads will be fine, just keep the compression low at 8.5:1.  Put a little cam in the 500 lift range and the thing will idle great and make good power.  Oh. ... 800 horse will need more cam.

Hemi_ jay

Sounds like a cool project you have going. I just put a single turbo on my duster this summer.  I think its the ultimate for a street car. The mild manners of a turbo car appealed to me. Able to run mild gears, running a 3.55 with a 30 inch tall tire on mine, and mild camshafts , they are capable and many guys are running cars pushing 650-800 rear wheel horsepower and still getting 16-18 mpg.

If you think it will cost you x amount of dollars to build , just double that figure and you'll probably be close, at least thats what I have found doing mine.

Video of mine after getting it going with turbo , since then have put a custom turbo grind, 528-538 lift and 235-238 at .050

About the EFI; in my opinion, it's the only sensible way to go. But for 1000$; forget it. You can get the injectors for that money, and not much else. As far as I know, the problem really isn't making power, but to put it on the ground. We just built our first turbo engine, and have run it a couple of times. Until recently, we didn't gather any data, had the oxygen sensor attached in one run, everyhting was very much on the safe side, and after that we have basically just driven and added boost little by little. Here is a video of some early testing:

At the moment we are still very much on the rich side with A/F, and haven't palyed with the ignition timing at all. So far the car, which is "slightly" bigger than an A-body, has run 8.41/163 mph on pump gas and DOT tires, and still has A LOT in it.
