Here is my new build, and like my 440source build, I will say how it went - Unlike my 440Source build, this one will be low buck.
1972 400 block, bored to 4.382 Forged 440 crank, cut to fit the 400 block (-125 on the mains, -.25 on the counterweights) 400 rods with new ARP bolts KB 251 pistons, cut to .040 quench, ~10:1 (on sale now for $216 from Summit!) Hyd comp cams .507/.510 240/246 duration Iron race heads HOGGGGGGEEDDD out. Man I forgot how big I ported those things. I have another set of 452 heads that were max ported, and my race heads look like 2x the size everywhere. I am almost wondering if they are bigger than my bulldogs. 2.14 1.81 manley race valves, 10 deg titanium retainers Harland sharp rockers Windage tray KB oil pump Milodon pickup ARP main studs ARP head studs Stock 383/440 balancer MP electronic distributor MSD 6a
Marine flywheel Edelbrock 11-3 exhaust manifolds Nicson 3.25 inch snails
Edelbrock torker with an 850 DP 250 cheeter shot plate, 1 inch open spacer (OR 2x 450 CFM mech Holleys on a weiand tunnelram if it ever gets here + 2x 150 HP plates. )
3 inch exhaust tips A impeller Place divertor
The scary part is - other than the pistons, rings, and bearings and the tunnelram itself - these are all spare parts! This is including little stuff like NOS lines, bottles, brackets, etc....I even found a brand new unused set of plugs in my shed...
I'll let you all know how it turns out. I need to kick some Chevy and Ford BB butt at the river - they are all gonna be hunting for me...

Oh yea, and because this will be behind a jet, rpm directly = horsepower. So, you guys will get hp numbers. I will compare the single plane open spacer to single plane 4 hole, 850 dp to 750 vac, and tunnel ram vs single. I may even do a dual plane, but I only have a stocker.

Right on, keep us updated on the build and the results!
Have you had a motor in your hull before this one? What'd it run?
I think if I go get a river runner I'm going to end up with a Hydrostream just due to the cost factor.

With the built olds 455 (herbert .490 230 duration cam, performer, 850 DP, ported heads, harden logs) I GPS'ed it at 44 MPH at 4500 RPM at lake elsinore with really crappy conditions. When I started it turned 4000RPM with excelent conditions.... My hull is a 74 cheyenne, kinda like a hallet V (same bottom).

Gotcha. I know next to nothing about the jet drives in those things, but I like the way they look. www.screamandfly.com is a good place to check out if you get a chance.

I have a 20 foot Allison Craft. 100 + with a 225 horse outboard.
I used to have a 19' Tahiti with a 455 Olds and a Berkley Jet. It was cool as hell looking, but for me, outboards are the best bang for the buck.

Allison's ROCK. I would like one, but I'll go for the less expensive Hydrostream when it come time. I was looking at V-Kings and Vectors. I'd like to rock a Skater too. I saw one a month ago on vacation down at Table Rock sporting a worked over 280. Sounded pretty sick.

I gutted the entire boat and glassed in a new bottom and floor. I'm pulling it down again next year to paint it. It looks very 80's right now.

My bottom is getting a new gel coat today - they will finish it in a few weeks, and flip it to get the top. I'm probably about 4 weeks away from installing the BB mopar...

That's awesome, a Mopar in a boat. I've been a mechanic forever, including a marine mechanic and I can count on one hand all the Chrysler powered performance boats I've seen. There was a machinist who was a little "off". He had some old wooden S box with a pair of slant sixes in it.

Thanks!
You should see the looks I get when I say "yes, I'm doing an engine swap. The 455 olds is coming out and I'm throwing in a 452 mopar." Everyone looks at me like I'm crazy. I think - easy 500+ HP for 300 bucks in parts...and more where that came from! (I'm probably am not wierd enough to use a pair of /6's though :-) Maybe I should see if I can bore it a hair more to get 2 more ci, then I can say I'm doing a 454....I need to build it right though, many are gonna want to race next season to show me how much better the 454's are. That long throw 454 crank may get them off the line, but that 4.382 bore size will more than make up for it...
It's hard to have a handle like speedymopars on the jet boat boards with an OLDS in the boat!
I have to do the swap anyway, my boat was in an accident, and the brand new 3 day old stringers were slightly damaged where the olds was mounted. Switch engines to anything other than an olds, suddenly I don't have to replace the $2500 stringers anymore.

So I've changed the setup a little bit -
The hyd Hughes cam is out, and a custom herbert solid roller grind, .606 lift, 246 duration on a 110 LC. I still don't know what manifold I am going to use, I have many to choose from. I need to get this together and have a big garage sale - I just found ANOTHER set of solid rollers....
We have the boat repaired hull wise, it's been stripped down, flipped back upright and now they are about ready to shoot the new gel coat. It will be white with blue flames. I scored a set of glenwood 440 V drive mounts, pretty trick though I am going to have to make a custom cam button for it.

Speedymopars, OK, I saw your response to my question in the other post. Yes, by pump, I meant jet drive. In the northwest, most guys call them pumps...
Do you have any details about how to link the crank to the pump? Pictures? The Berkeleys are used on whitewater, but dual stage pumps are preferred for boats that will be carrying a load, so it would be cool to figure out how to hook up a mopar BB to a Hamilton or something else...
I always tripped out on why jet guys weren't using Mopars, since they have a superior design for sustained 4000-6000 rpm use. Nobody uses Mopar up here on the rivers. Its a shame...
Thanks

I have a round plate that adapts the flywheel to the std pump drive CV joint. It is about 5 inches in diamiter, and fits in the void on a 4spd flywheel . I can probably take pictures later. It was on this 383 I bought for 300 bucks out of a jet boat. had all the stainless screws, various adapters, exhaust, etc. All and all a smokin deal. The pushrods were bent, but judging from the valvesprings and thier diameter, they shouldn't have been using stock pushrods. PureGTS says they probably over reved the engine, and I have to agree. Everything else looks great

You ought to see the unlimited class jet boats race up the Rogue River and back! Going through gnarly class 3 and worse rapids, ripping around insane corners, barely missing huge cliffs and rocks. All while going 100+ mph! Unfortunately, none of them are Mopar powered as far as I know. Chevy rules in that game, probably because of the availabilty of parts and costs.

Damn - crank doesn't clear. I need to cut another .050 off :-( My crank should be done by tomorrow. I also decided I am going to do this one std chy orange (not the hemi orange) and polished aluminum. I only have a few days to get this done, then I am back on late nights when I get a moment schedule.
Good news though, I definately have a 230 block. How do I tell if it is one of those cold weather blocks? The mains look really beefy. I was at Orange county boat repair today looking in on my boat, it's next in line for the gel coat. The boat in there (keep in mind this is completely stripped, just a shell) is being gel coated purple with orange scallops. I said, wow that's unusual - it's almost like the guy who owns this like Chryslers. The Guy responded, "how did you know that? There is a Big block Mopar going in there"
I'm weird but not alone :-)
My trailer will be done in a few weeks so I need to get this thing done ASAP. As soon as the boat finishes, I need to load it on the new trailer (so that *better* finish first) at the paint shop, take it home and throw the engine in, and get that done quickly so I can get back into the interior shop before the rush hits.
