Jets are safer with Kids plus I don't want to be all paraniod in shallow water like my friends at the river...
I started out just wanting to spend 3-5K on a decent boat. Wife got involved she wanted to spend 10-15K. We are now 20K into the 10K boat. Granted everything will be brand new from the trailer/stringers up, but still it is more than I ever dreamed of spending. I'm way into it, so I might as well finish and enjoy the damn thing...
I'll have head and main studs, windage tray, etc.

Spring of '72 should be the good block. Looks like the thick main webs in the picture, too...

I don't know about you but, I would "take" the engine as is!

What do you mean? I unwrapped it to take a picture (and then rewraped it). Or are refering to it when it is in the boat?

Sometime sheet happens. It is what you do when you have a problem that defines the company you are dealing with.
3 of my KB pistons weren't made right. Sure the top of the piston was 4.382 like it should be, but the middle was 4.394. Obviously it wouldn't drop into the bore and if it had been a tad smaller, maybe it would have gone in but seized shortly afterwards.
Anyway, I called Summit Racing and told them what was up. The sent a UPS truck to me the next day, and are drop shipping an entire new set of pistons from United (kb-silvolite) on a rush (they are a non stocking piston for summit).
Summit definately has taken care of me, and as we tend to focus on complaints, here is something good that happened. Summit will be keeping my business for a long time....

OK, pistons are cut. The heads need to be cut in the chambers in a few cylinders to allow the cc's to match (they are varying between 78 and 86cc's). Balancing is done. Block is done (is this a cold weather block?) . The boat has now finished and sanded gel coat ...

Yup, that's the "cold weather" block.
Are the valve heads coated with something?
I have the same KB pistons. Haven't installed them yet. Explain again where the dimensions were off?
Thanks

Hearing I have the cold weather block makes me happy :-) The pistons were off dimensionally on the skirt, the diameter was not consistant on 3 pistons.

OK, thanks. Were they out of round? Or was the diameter different on the top of the piston versus the skirt?

OK, got the short block done. The stock BY rods (with ARP's) haven't exploded yet, so I'm good. The cut down 440 crank, ARP studs, and everything else look good so far. I have the pan and windage tray painted and installed, just installed the oil pump. I do have a question though - what is the measurement on the std vs HV pump? I haven't run a stock type pump in so long, I can't tell the difference anymore. I'm curious what I have....
I had to make a gasket for the oil pump to block, as I can't seem to find anyone who has the gasket.
I now have a cast 400 crank and balancer that needs a home, so if you are in the market, PM me. I'm probably going to go to the Long Beach HiPo meet in the next month to clear out the garage.
Still need to create a stop for my cam button for the glenwood front mount (one piece integrated with the timing cover).

When I lived in California my neighbor had a ski boat similar to that one. On a ski outting with my neighbor and a few large women, one of the women was in the water and we were trying to lift her back into the boat. Well another boat came by and the wake broke right over the back of our boat and sunk my friends boat. There went a good motor. After that I've never been a big fan of a shallow hull for sking. Yours is a good lookin boat though!

wow that sucks. Actually my boat sits quite high out of the water, comparitively speaking to the other lake racers out there.

Here is what I ended up with instead of what I planned: changes (old) new
1972 400 block, bored to 4.382 Forged 440 crank, cut to fit the 400 block (-125 on the mains, -.25 on the counterweights) 400 rods with new ARP bolts KB (251) 215 pistons, cut to .040 quench, ~10.2:1 (Hyd comp cams .507/.510 240/246 duration) Herbert custom grind - solid roller . 606 lift, 246 duration Iron race heads HOGGGGGGEEDDD out. Man I forgot how big I ported those things. I have another set of 452 heads that were max ported, and my race heads look like 2x the size everywhere. I am almost wondering if they are bigger than my bulldogs. 2.14 1.81 manley race valves, 10 deg titanium retainers Harland sharp rockers Windage tray (KB oil pump) HV pump (Milodon pickup) 3/8ths pickup for jet pan I have ARP main studs ARP head studs (Stock 383/440 balancer) CAT fluidampr copy. MP electronic distributor MSD 6a
Marine flywheel Edelbrock 11-3 exhaust manifolds Nicson 3.25 inch snails
Edelbrock torker with an 850 DP 250 cheeter shot plate, 1 inch open spacer OR 2x 450 CFM mech Holleys on a weiand tunnelram + 2x 150 HP plates.
(3) 4 inch exhaust tips (A) AA impeller Place divertor

It's ground to be straight up - I have to balance the 10.2:1 compression with bad gas and enough duration to allow the engine to live. In a jet boat, your RPM's are only limited to how much HP you make - the jet is like having a 5500 stall. I'm going to be real conservative with timing, that's for sure.

OK, quench is .043 (I was shooting for .040, so close enough - can't put back material on the pistons), valve to piston clearance is .308 (i) and .310 (e) . Way more than I was expecting with an over .600 lift cam.

Getting close. I decided to start out with the single 4 bbl, get it running, and then see what manifold / carb combo works the best.
I need new plug wires and make some shims fo rhte alternator to align it correctly, but other than that, it's damn close to being able to drop in.
