I'm very interested in this also. Been thinking along these lines just in case my hemi blows the guts out of my 18 spline............

while we're at it... what is the power limit to these things? My future build will somehow consist of having 1000+hp and i only want to buy the tranny once...

Are you going to run slicks on it? If you run a radial tire you could probably double the rated horsepower - the big stress is the moment you dump the clutch - even if the tire spins just a couple revs it takes the stress off the trans. This why T5's survive in camaros and mustangs.
However, if you'll really have 1000+ horsepower I think you better look a bit higher than a tremec...

thanks, i forgot about the transzilla. the tr-6060 doesn't have much info and i checked out the d and d performance and it mostly looks like they have the stock trannies... no slicks, the car is going to be for protouring... so mostly radial tires and the plan will be to hit 4 digit numbers... what were you referring to when you said that i should look higher than a tremec?

I was thinking rockland or lenco. 1000hp is quite alot for normal parts.

Check out G-force transmissions also. Very pricey but big HP.

I picked up a Viper spec Borg-Warner T-56 a few weeks back. I know others such as MikeR have used the viper spec behind a BB Mopar. My question is how do I go about figuring out exactly what parts I need to complete this conversion, such as the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, etc? This is the first time I have ever really messed with swapping a tranny.

I am in the process of installing a t56 behind a 400 in my Dart. I used a quicktime bellhousing and a GM t56. For this setup it needs to be a LS1 style t56. There isnt much need to worry about breaking a t56 with anything pro-touring with low profile tires. A friend of mine has a volvo with a twin turbo LS2 in it and he beats the crap out of it and hasnt broke the trans. Also the quicktime bellhousing is set up so you can use a stock camaro slave cylinder. Camaro t56s are much cheaper you can get them for $200-$500.

A friend of mine gave it to me it came out of a 93 camaro so I needed to change the input shaft to the longer LSx shaft.

Do you know which version for a 6.1 or 3G hemi? Also does anyone know if the SRT-10 Ram truck Viper transmission is the same as the true Viper car transmission. I imagine the input shaft is the same since it's the same motor, but how about the gear ratios/spread?

that's a good question, not sure... i've seen lots of info on the t56 from vipers but not from the srt-10 rams... maybe the dodge dealer could tell you...

Does anyone know if the viper t-56 has the longer input shaft? Or what exactly is this affecting? And I looked back through MikeR's post and he was using a modified scatter shield because the quicktime bellhousing was not available at the time. But besides that he was using a firebird clutch, a big block flywheel, and a Viper throwout bearing all on a viper spec t-56. Does anyone know if those same parts would work with the quicktime bellhousing? And I have no idea as for what to do for a slave cylinder so if anyone has any insight on that it would be great.

I am using a big block flywheel camaro clutch disk and mopar presure plate. The slave cylinder should be part of the throwout bearing.

Thanks for the info, and could you provide alittle more as for more specific part numbers? Also besides these parts what else is needed. I know nothing about this conversion but had the opportunity to pick a t-56 up so i couldn't turn it down.

I dont have the exact part numbers. I got everything from napa I went in there and figured it out. I think I am using a 10.5 inch clutch from a early 90s camaro 91 or 92. The presure plate and flywheel are 10.5 inch dodge parts and the throwout bearing is for an LS1 camaro.

Thanks, that is more of what I was wondering. I didn't know if I had to use all t-56 parts or if want you said there would work. Also do you have your setup in the car and running yet?

I finally got a chance to call Quicktime bellhousing and talked with Ross there. They are a very helpful company. I will definitely buy from them. Don't quote all the details on this---call to confirm. I was writing fast.....I may have missed a bit.
They make several bells for different T-56 and engines.
Their T-56 GM version does use the LS1 style transmission. This can use a hydraulic throw out bearing. Their T-56 Viper version uses of course the Viper T-56 and is set up for the stock Viper fork and mechanical slave actuator. (can anyone verify that the viper uses a fork and slave?) I don't know Vipers. The new TR6060 high performance unit from OEM applications utilize a integrated bellhousing if I understood correctly, but Tremec has one out or is coming out with the same 6060 transmission with a "divorced" bell to use the standard T-56 bolt pattern which will bolt to their bells. Tremec is calling this the T-56 Magnum. I see Tremec mentions it on their website if you search. No details though. Quicktime said this will bolt up to one of their bells.
My question about the 6.1 hemi and the T-56 is answered by the same above, just that the LA engine bell is used with a LA starter and remains on the driver's side at the 7 o'clock position. They are coming out with a dedicated new gen hemi 5.7/6.1 bell in a couple of months that will allow the starter on the passenger's side also at the 5 o'clock position.
Quicktime does not sell or provide pilot bearings. You need to go to NAPA or somewhere and figure it out or have one machined. They basically said they can mate up almost any T-56 to any Mopar engine. It might require a different input or front plate at most.
This is becoming a great thread!

sycboi,
Thanks for the Viper info. I too plan on going with the hydraulic TO also. Easier and cleaner for my application. What brand of set up did you use? Next question: Anyone have any additional info on the new T-56 Magnum (the TR6060with the standard T-56 bold pattern)? Release about June, but that's all I know.

maybe this question has been answered before but I just havn't seen it. I'm wondering where the shifter would come out with the array of T56 transmissions that came in all these different vehicles. If possible I want to reuse my stock console after install so nobody is the wiser of what I've got under the shifter.
I also have a question on bellhousing. I am building a car that will eventually see a turbo charged slant, I figured because I'd likely get a custom built SFI approved bellhousing that I might as well get it built for a better trans anyways. so I just wanted to make sure with the guys who have already bought one that the bellhousing I see on the trans already is removable?

I don't have an answer for that either....... I have the same question regarding sourcing a pilot bearing for a t-56/6.1L Hemi combo. Anyone? Quicktime said I may have to have one machined?
