Anyone rewired their car completely?
« on: October 17, 2007, 02:14:03 AM »

I plan on redoing the complete wiring harness in my dart and was looking at using a kit from ether painless or ezwiring. Painless charges about 500 for a complete harness and the ezwiring harness is about the same for 165. I think this is a pretty good idea especially since the stock reproduction harnesses are almost 500 for just the interior harness. Has anyone done this type of thing? It's the 21 circuit harness from ez and the 18 circuit harness from painless I'm looking at.

I'm also thinking of doing a H4 headlight conversion witht he clear headlights from year one just for the simple fact it's better then stock.

Headlights:($69 for a pair)

Just wondering if anyone has done this before and could tell me how hard it is. I've done wiring before and I don't think it would be overly hard, but I've never done a complete car.

We wired Alan's Barracuda from scratch (no kits), but we did follow the factory wiring diagram for the circuits we wanted. The biggest problem that I have heard about the kits is that they don't connect to the turn signals properly (or something like that).

Would that just be because of the modern wiring to old column relationship? I'm going to upgrade to an XVmotorsports column maybe that would solve the problem?

I think it was made to connect to a Chev column, or something like that.

i ran into a prob with the signals when i wired my car
they needed a diode to seperate their circuit from the tailights, painless has a kit for it.
I just bought a fuse block and rolls of wire so i could run everything exactly where i wanted, and eliminating those plugs in the firewall was a big plus too.

I totally rewired my Dart from scratch, using a Painless 18 circuit. You want to get the kit that is wired to the fuse panel, the ones with the fuse panels that you have to fish the wires into and then turn a little brass screw to hold it in is a royal pain in the butt. Did one of them for a guy on a total rewire street rod.
With the Painless, you get bundles of wires off the fuse panel that are labeled....one bundle is "underhood", one is "underdash" etc. You take one bundle and totally go from start to finish with that bundle and then move to another. Don't start 3 or 4 bundles and try to remember where you were...........you won't!!
It also pays to have a good charged battery with clips to test as you go.

i used a painless kit on my est friends dart, i had access to factory style terminals to go in the column and so forth.  the best advice i can give is work one circuit at a time and read as much as you can before you start

When you have to splice wires invest in a small butane soldering torch in lieu of mechanical connections or crimps.

I love this thing.

Wiring up old cars is a piece of cake.  Just take your time and label all you wires.  Take pictures if needed.  There's really not much to an A body electrical system.

I rewired my 73 Dart Sport with a kit from Ron Francis. I had checked on other kits but I liked the fuse box from Ron Francis the best.

I've used both painless and EZ wiring in late model Mustangs.  Both were pretty straight forward, the directions did suck pretty good though.  I plan on running with an EZ kit on the Dart this time around.

As far as converting to those headlamps DO IT! i have the samething on my Demon with Silverstar H4's in it and when they release the Ultra verison i will be getting those. how many circuits do you guys think I'll need? I'm not sure how many the car took originally.

Is there anywhere that makes an exact reproduction of the factory wiring harness? I need the underhood harness only, but can't seem to find any Mopar wiring harnesses on the net anywhere.

Thanks,
George
