OE suspension colors?
« on: November 06, 2007, 06:32:42 AM »

I'm curious what the original colors my suspension pieces should be. I've seen lots of cars with one color suspension assemblies but I'm curious what their suspposed to be I've seen gold colored(zinc?) lower control arms and other colors. I'm no going for concourse for my car I just want things to look half a**ed right.

lol I plan everything out beforehand doug lol. I'm going crazy because all I have to rip down and clean is the bellhousing and clutch assemble.

once the car hits my driveway(at the fiances house right now) it will be apart in like 2 weeks and I'll magically disappear from bbd sign... for a while at least lol.

I like the powder coat on the upper and lower control arms.  Should last for a long time.

Thanks.  The lowers were powder coated in bronze color.  Could have been a little darker I think.

When I soaked the crud and grease off of my lower control arms, I saw no evidence of any plating or paint anywhere. There was a white paint splotch on the forward side of the arms themselves, and a splotch of blue paint on the tip of the part that the torsion bar inserts into. Other than those two inspection marks, the arms were not painted or plated. Did I miss something?? This was a California car built in LA if that makes any difference. 1969 Dart Swinger 340.

hmm ok does this sound about right guys? I phoned a local place about powdercoating that k member and parts I'm getting from you doug and they quoted me 900 for just black and 1200 for colors. I think I'll be placing an order with summit for a powder coating gun and finding a cheap oven(it's only like 40 minutes at 400 degrees to make powdercoating work.

That sounds right.  The bare steel would have been coated in cosmoline at the factory.  I had my lower control arms powder coated bronz color to simulate the cosmoline.

Those prices sound pretty high.  A small local shop did my stuff.  He did the bead blasting too.

Actually check out this page on summit's website. you can buy 1 pound of powder(apparently 1.5 ounces will cover 7 square feet) for like 16 bucks. way cheaper then paying someone to do it.

My lower arms are painted black.  I was told they stopped painting them in '68 and coated with Cosmoline, which is a waxy corrosion preventive compound.  Check this out: Cosmolene appearance on LCA
I posted some pics on this thread that may be of use to you also: Proper Finish for Suspension Parts

thanks much but I think shipping would kill me on that.

lol thats pretty cool that they used cosmoline but I'm not going for a completely concourse suspension lol if I was brave enough I'd do it all in red then I'd have a red front assembly and red in the back to.
