69 dart rear tire size question
« on: November 14, 2007, 10:49:05 PM »

Ok I know this has been beat to death, but I'm undecided even after two days worth of research on bbd sign, Plan is to run a 15x8 wheel (steelie bought from the "Wheel Guy"). Current set up is 235x60x14, just want a wider tire.

Whats the widest I could go on the 15x8 w/o moving springs in? The wheel guy said he can make them what backspace I want.

And if I only move the springs in (NO mini tub) whats the widest I could go?

Attached some car pics and a pic of the small block I just finished (209 sloid cam, KB pistons and ported/polished 340X heads).

Thanks

I have a 1968 dart GT - 12" total width rear wheelwell space, this with the inner lip rolled in and the 7/8" offset spring relocation kit.

These kits give you the maximum space available without mini-tubbing. They place the outer edge of the springleaf directly in line with the inner side of the wheelwell. You will have remove the existing Spring Seat on the axle and re-weld a new one to fit the spring's new location.

Tires are BFG 255/60R-15. Wheels are Cragar SS (15 X8) with 5" back Spacing.

I find that for my daily driver, the BFG 255s are the widest tire I can fit...as you can see in the first pic, they still can rub a bit in a sever lean during a fast turn. If you intend your car as a daily driver, this is something to consider.

I hope that this helps...

On my 68 GT i have Hoosier 275-55-14s on a 14x7" steel wheel with 4 5/8" bs.  The springs are moved, but it isn't  mini tubbed yet.  Like Mike said above, they fit, but they will rub a little under spirited driving.

275 section width on a 9 inch rim will fit with the stock spring location if you have the back spacing perfect and you do a little massaging.
