I've seen good jobs for 6-8K, high quality is more like 10-15k, show quality may be more around here in md. if you have no hook ups in a shop

I was told 3500 just for black paint on my ram with smoothing out all the dents. I've heard of some paintjobs where it's just one color will cost over 10 grand.

depends on the condition of the car.......older cars easily turn into a can of worms. ya start strippin and disassemblin; next thing ya know its a full blown resto. those crusty old suspension parts and k-frame wont do a fresh engine bay any justice.....then theres reassembling a fresh car without scratching it.....its all hours multiplied by dollars.....ive learned to expect the worst, i find strippin and guttin a car is actually the easiest way, whats a few hundred hours anyway. i actually prefer buying a car in boxes...........the paint job itself after a thoroughly prepped body isnt done till it sanded, buffed, and polished. materials alone can very expensive

I guess I was wondering because my car just hit the 10,000 mark.  The thing is, the metal is all solid.  Not a spot of rust anywhere.  The guy took all the paint off and is working from bare metal.  I imagine this price should include getting the car to engine drop in stage?  Sometimes I wonder where the fun of working on cars went!

materials can be upwards of 1500-2000 when ya add everything up. stripper, primer, abrasives, paint, the list goes on. that leaves 8500 divided by lets say 70/hour. thats like 120 hours. thats 1 guy kickin as for 3 full weeks....and if he gets it done hes REALLY kickin ass

OK I'll stick my foot in this contarversale subject. A good quality paint job can get very cosstly, depending on what you really want.  You say includding the engine bay.  But is it going to be the same color it is now?  Let me tell you what was involved in paintng just the engine bay.  Since the car was hit the engine was pulled to do work on the inner panels frame rails etc.  For the paint the k frame and all suspension parts were removed then sheet metal was sanded everywhere. Then the sheet metal was painted.  Meanwhile the suspension parts were cleaned, sanded, painted.  Thats part of a quality paint job.
Total cost to paint my GTS was in excess of $15,000.  For that, every piece of metal was reworked and repainted there is not one single place on that car that did not get fresh paint.  Over 175 hours of sanding buffing etc.  The owner of the shop and I worked out some barter work to help cut costs ( I got to work on his car as part of the deal )  as well as my own tme invested in disassembly of parts and then puttiing it back together.
A quality paont job will cost you money.  Rember paint is the first and last thing anybody sees on your car.  You want it to look good.

    Maynard

PS. The shop that painted my cars is also now a sponser on the race car .....it all helps.

illfish

"What should a high quality paint job cost?" lets see 20 hrs. @ 100 bucks an hour hmm 2000 dollars less tax.

"Including very minor bump work, fitting of fenders, hood, etc.  engine bay too." oh, it's apart and has "minor" damage, sorry no quotes over the phone.

dont forget the inners under hood doors trunk lid glass removal trim removal bumper removal.

you never mentioned the vehicle type model or year trim ect.

not including any "bumping" of "minor" dent's don't be suprised at 100 hrs at 100 an hour for the "basics" no under-carriage work no stripping just a squirt and go.

For those that are still wanting to know why it cost so much to paint a car, here is a break down to help understand.
Media blast=1800
Paint per gallon=650
Labor per hour= 45
now on top of that, primer, clear, other materials.
If you do not do all the disassebly and reassembly you will have shop hours at about 65 dollars per hour. I have been looking at paint samples from 450 to 975 pergallon of paint. To do the complete car top and bottom, inside and out. Oh and have some for repairs later you nee 2 gallons of paint. I hope this helps. I am helping with the work on a 69 Charger 500. This car is very rough. The owner has spent about 11K to this point. He bought quarters(full and very nice) 1800 ea. 1 piece trunk floor 399. Both floor pans at 199 each. Just keep these things in mind when you buy a car.

i paid 6k for mine and that included me doing all the disassembly and reassembly.  i supplied the tape stripe and front/rear gaskets as well.  i had 45 hoours of bodywork to make it really straight and zero rust.

I spent about 6K on my paint job for my 66 charger. Plus a grand for media blasting. I also dissembled and reassembled plus did most of the sanding. No rust just fill some small dents. So if I take actual cost plus my labor it would be close to 8K- 9K

Paint and body work on a car has so many variables.....geographic location, materials used, quality of work, customer level of expectation (define hi quality??), big name shop or small one person operation?, condition of car to start.   Lots of subjective questions........

Once a car is in bare metal, a shop or individual should be able to come close on an estimate (w/in reason anyway).  I have seen $5k jobs look better than $8500 jobs......

My brother is a painter at a busy shop, he does some side work......he tells a guy that $4500 to do a complete on a jeep on the side, the guy goes somewhere else and gets it done for $4000 and it looks terrible, according to the owner of the jeep.  If he spent an extra $500 for my brother to do it the jeep would've turned out very good..........point is find someone you have seen there prior work and costs associated with there work

Illlfish how did it turn out???
