I'm just wondering what the best setup is for an auto tranny shifter in an early A body. I thought about a linkage operated unit, but wondered how much room there is for linkage between the tranny case and the floorboard. Seems that the early A tranny tunnels are pretty tight fits for 904s and REALLY tight for 727s. If that's the case, then the cable operated shifters become the better (or ONLY) option. I've heard of cable failures from heat damage. Seems there that the key is to keep the cable away from exhaust parts. The transmission case wouldn't get much hotter than the trans fluid, would it??? So, the exhaust is the only really hot stuff in the area, right? So the trick is to use an appropriate length of cable to make the loops large and smooth, and at the same time keep em away from manifolds, headers, and exhaust pipes.
Who has the experience with aftermarket floor shifters for 727 & 904 trannys in early A bodies, and which brands do you like and why, please???
And, as always, THANKS!!

I have a Hurst quarter stick in my 66 Dart. Have had it in there for going on 8 yrs now, with no problems. I also went with a Lokar cable operated kick down as well, and that works well too.

Art Carr or Winters gate shifter, cable exits from the rear of the shifter and ends up well away from the headers and everything else. Best Torqueflite shifter there is IMO.

You can also wrap the exhuast with header wrap, that helps with keeping the heat in and not burning up your cable

i use a b&m quick silver in my dart (472 w 727) using the pro cable, the trick is to run the cable towards the passenger side and the around the front of the trans.

Lokar has a trans mount shifter and they just came out with a floor mount cable shifter.
