I have been told that when I put my 440 in my car I will have to change the torsion bars,who makes heavy duty torsion bars?My car is a 71 Scamp

that sort of depends on what your intentions for the car are and what it was before (/6? smallblock?).
street car?
drag only car?
etc.

If it's a drag race only car, small bars as found on slant 6 cars work well.
If it's going to see any significant time on the street, it's definitely in your best interests to get some larger bars. There is a company called Firm Feel that makes bars. I bought some from them, but have not yet installed them. Firm Feel has the best prices for NEW torsion bars that I could find anywhere. .940 or 1.00" bars would be reasonable for a street car. can you measure the O.D w/ calipers to see what bars you have if unsure?

I did on mine, came up with .87 for a 318 air car, which is what its supposed to come with. So I am guessing you can measure them that way.

I have .920 bars in my 72- 440 Scamp . I bought it this way . It has power steering . It seems to handle very well & respond good but I haven't pushed it in a corner too hard ,,,still leary ---bushings , ball joints & tie-rod ends are all still 35 year old stock stuff- all looks good but ya never know!!!! It seems to hook o.k. but a strip trip w/slicks would tell the truth (then I worry about scrambled 727 ! )  I guess the front end doesn't rise too much upon serious acceleration,,, so maybe toooooooostiff--------------Oh no,,my Scamp's on Cialis!!!!-----------Mopar Tom |

Mopar Performance, which you can order from Mancini or your local dealer. Sometimes the local dealer will not charge you shipping and that saves enough to make it a good deal. I just looked them up and wow - the price must have gone up recently. A lot.
There are aftermarket suppliers too, but I've never bought from them.

People just spout off things they have heard before, and it somehow becomes fact. Our cars are under sprung up front in stock form. I can say that I have driven a 440 Dart with /6 torsions and 90/10 shocks, and it was not scary to drive, squirrely, or uncontrollable. It handled about the same as my '64 273 GT Dart, which isn't good, in my opinion, but is the way Chrysler wanted it. Think of it like drum and disc brakes. Does having 4 wheel drums make a car a death trap, no, but discs are much better. When the price went up on torsions, I got a set of .99" that were still $120 and QA1 Stocker Star single adjustable shocks. That's what I recommend. The shocks were expensive, but good shocks can not be overrated, and that doesn't mean KYB.

They are probably fine for a porky street car that isnt purpose built. They are an inexpensive solution that gets the job done, about one-fourth the cost of QA1 or Koni (both adustable).
I found them to be harsh and jarring, making the car skittish.

Correction. I meant a good shock cannot be overrated. As far as what's wrong with KYB shocks. I haven't tried them, but there are many testimonials on this and other boards that they don't work well on our cars, if not junk. Also, lots of people that race autocross, and SCCA, and don't have tons of money in their cars, but have experience with what works, and want good results for their money and effort don't like them.
