Hey I Have A Dumb Question
« on: November 27, 2007, 01:02:39 PM »

Try to act surprised  brain fart   lol bash I'm ordering some new wheels from summit and I'm getting some lug nuts while I'm at it, But I realized that I have no idea what size of lug nuts I need.  I don't know what info you need to find out what size so it's a 70 dart, sbp, drums all around and a 7-1/4 rear. So what size of lug nuts do I need? Damn I feel dumb, Thanks for the help guys

Going off the top of my head, I think they're half inch. Can you check them with a thread guage or maybe there's a chart on McGuard's webpage or something?

SBP is 7/16 (I forget the thread pitch, though). You may still have some left hand threads as I'm not sure when Chrysler stopped doing that.........

I agree with Jim.  Small bolt pattern setup will have 7/16" studs.  I can't remember the pitch either, but there will only be 2 choices: left or right hand thread.  You can figure that part out easy enough.

I was going to get them from the parts store but in there computer my 70 dart is the 5 x 4-1/2  and I know that's not true and they would most likely give me the wrong lug nuts at $1.89 each. So I just decide to get the set of 20 from summit (for $30) since i'm getting my rims from them anyways. And I took a lug nut off my car today and they're right hand thread. Thanks for the help guys thank you

That sounds like a great idea. Now I have a couple more questions. What size, length, ect. studs do I need? any of these work? http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?Ntt=7%2F16+studs&N=700+115+4294923107&Ntk=KeywordSearch  I would like to order from summit since I'll be ordering other stuff from them shortly. In case you couldn't tell all of this is new to me  hammer Also are these easy to put on? And can I put them on without taking anything else off besides the wheel? I really don't know what I'm doing.  \/][

And Roger After all this unexpected crap I might need one or two beers .................

or 12 drinks  lol

7/16" I think. And be careful, I think 1970 or 1971 had weird left handed lugs on one side of the car, I'm not sure if A-bodies had them, but some of the bigger cars did.

Somebody already got this one I guess. Napa was the only place that I could get left-handed lugs in town BTW.

the rears you can use a hammer and tap them out .... the fronts are another story ... they are crimped into the drum and hub.  I have taken them out before but i had to cut the stud off and grind it level with the drum and then put it into the press and back the sud up with a socket so i didn't bend the hub/drum assembly and they were still a bitch to get out ...you will definilty need a press, they go in much easier than out ... duster

7/16-20 is the thread size.  chrysler stopped the silly left handed threads in 1970 on all models.  they make lugs in both left and right hand threads.

One way to do the fronts is to go to wrecking yard and get a right side hub. The last time I was at west 29th street auto wrecking, They had a few A bodies out there. Then just get 5 right side studs from a good auto parts store.

I got mine at Pep Boys; Napa could get them, but they had to be ordered. I'll tell you what, I've never seen so many people wonder what the hell I was talking about as I did when I was looking for those damn things. Everyone's computers seemed to give the wrong information, and no one seemed to understand the concept of a nut turning one way as opposed to the other.

And yeah, it's definitely 7/16"... Wink

This used to be pretty common - but Chrysler was one of the last holdouts.

I learned the hard way back in the 1980's...  Better to ask a dumb question than take a dumb action!

And just to totally hijack the thread, this:

BTW......There is only two dumb questions.
1)   Would you like a beer?
2)   Would you like another beer?

made me remember a conversation where I went into a parts store, and said "I have a stupid question for you."  The guy behind the counter told me, "there are no stupid questions, only stupid people asking questions."  You gotta' laugh when it's funny, even when it's at your own expense.
