Tire height question???...New Approach
« on: November 29, 2007, 02:17:57 PM »

I'm setting up my rear and I need to know what is the tallest tire that you can run with mini tubbed wells and stock rear location on a 72 Duster?

Also what about with mini tubbed wells and a slightly moved back rear?

I also have Bill's Streetlynx 4 link coil over setup and I plan on having the car sit down a bit. At least to where there isn't much of a gap around the openings.

I was wanting to run at least a 28" tall tire but i possible I'd like to even go up to a 29".

Let me know what you're running and what you know.

I think with the stock rear location, 28" is probably the max.  If you move the rear back an inch, 30" tall tires are do-able.

I got 29" on stock wheel wells. I did cheat a bit and drilled the locating holes larger on axle and
shock mounts. Moved it almost 1/2" back.

Well I haven't moved the hangers in yet so I can place the rear where I want it basically. Especially with Bill's kit. I really just want to run a taller tire that is going to completely fill the opening without having to trim the lip. Also because I am going to go with a T-56 six speed and 5.13 gears in the Dana. So I need the taller tire.

What does it take to make this do-able???

Just re-locate the whole rearend 1" towards the rear of the car.  That gives you more room for a taller tire without having to cut the front lip of the wheel-well

Could just put longer studs or bolts in the front hangers and shim them back an inch or so.  28" tires is all you're gonna get in stock locations.  That's what I have on my duster

I agree that a 28" tall tire is the max with reareand in stock location.  If you have a Dana and are considering moving it back an inch, keep in mind that you will likely not be able to retain your stock fuel tank, at least without some serious massaging.

I'm looking at getting a 295/45/18 which will put me at 28.3"-28.5" in diameter. The thing is I want my car to sit down more that what farmington's duster is. Not a lot just a little more. I want to be able to set the ride height where I want it and I'll be able to do so with both the streetlynx and the alterKtion kits from Bill.

I haven't yet, but I have to move my hangers inboard so I still can run larger tires. So it won't be a problem when I do this to just move the rear back about an inch. I just have to check with Bill to make sure this won't be a problem.

Also the tank won't be a problem because I'm running a cell.

So if I move the rear back can I run a 28.5" tire and still sit the car down? If I don't move the rear back, can I run a 28" tire and still sit it down more? Or should I just go with a 26.5"-27" tire with stock rear location and sit the car down?

Am I making this too complicated? Ideally I'd like to run the 28.5" tire.

If you have access to a welder, it would probably be just as easy to remove the front spring hangers and make new longer ones or weld a spacer on the rear of the factory ones.  If you are moving the springs inboard anyway, just add a second set of holes 1 inch further to the rear.

For those who still use the factory fuel tank, you may be able to loosen the tank and slide it back to the rear of the car to gain some needed clearance.  My tank was able to move back about .250 inches yet when I removed it.

I am wondering if one could use rear wheel wells from a full size pickup truck, in an A-body?  They are nice large wheel tub and easy to find in a wrecking yard.  Could be easily modified and then slipped in from the bottom with minor surgery to the trunk extensions.

Alright would this work out? If I just completely removed the inner and outer wells completely and place the wheels with tires where I want them. Then have the axle cut down and have the suspension placed to match where I want the rear axle by welding the hangers accordingly. Then once all that is in place I can just buy some full steel tubs and place them accordingly to where I need them with where the wheels fall. Would this approach work?

Am I thinking correctly? It is the wheel well that restrains height? So if I move that forward it will take care of the problem. My goal is to have the wheel sitting up in the center of the opening.

It's actually the quarter panel that limits max tire diameter.  It's the bottom most part of the quarter, near the front part of the wheel opening that gets in the way.  So, unfortunately, it is more than just the wheelwell tub.  Take a look at some pictutures here:  http://www.bigblockdart.com/techpages/wopen.shtml
I hope this helps.

So I'm looking at either a 28.5" or a 28.8" tall tire. If I slightly move the rear back I should easily be able to run this tire correct?

Yes.  Keep in mind that if you move the rear back 1/2", it will actually gain you a full inch of addtional max tire capacity at the front part of the wheelwell.

I'm going to move the front lower section of the quarters forward an inch, when I replace the lower quarters on my Dart.  That way I will be ready for a tire upgrade when I fall into some cash!

On my 73 Duster, I did the front of the rear opening this same way except I moved the opening forward 2.5 inches and moved the Rear axle forward an inch to help with weight transfer.  Had 33" rubber under it.
