My Dart is finally in primer!!! YAY! (UPDATE)
« on: December 02, 2007, 10:08:54 PM »

Yup, finally, in primer, and its all one color! This is where the tease comes in. Unfortunatley Photobucket is down right now, so I cant post any pictures right now. I am going to try to attach one small one.

OK, here are some better pics.

These are pics of the final masking and how my garage was setup. I made my own filter unit with two furnace filters, a cardboard box, and a 3000 cfm blower fan.

Looks like a great job!  Just curious, what kind of compressor are you using?

Craftsman Professional 25 Gallon Horizontal with the oiled cylinder. It was able to keep up with the El-cheapo HVLP 1.5 primer gun whick I drilled out to make it a 1.85, It probably won't even break a sweat when I use my new Astro 1.4 LVLP gun for the paint.

Hello:
HOOORAYYYYY  looking good.  It's amazing how much work goes into that first primer coat on whole car, but when you stand back and look at it, it's worth every second of prep work.   Nice job, what color you going for on finish cooats, you gonna have "Flyboy's cyustom paint do it".
lol

I was originally going to paint it black, but I am questioning my ability to spray, so I am probably going to paint it red.

Cool! I'll bet you're thrilled. One step closer. Seems body work and paint is the single longest, most time consuming, often frustrating, part of a project.

agree AMEN!

Cheesy When I bought the Dart.

hammer I decided to do a brake job, when I said, "as long as I am doing this, I might as well..."

Huh When I started the bodywork

Tongue 2 months into the project

 Undecided 4 months

Nope, still have to put on another coat, most panels only have 1 coat, some have two. I want to get 3 coats on it before I block sand. I am going to try to do it tomorrow, I took 1/2 a day off Tuesday and Wednesday.

Very cool. I'm interested to find out how the LVLP gun works for you. I am contemplating getting one.

black is the easiest color to spray...try painting a white car Roll Eyes...obviously hiding bad bodywork is a different story

Today I finished up. I gave the whole car 2 coats on every panel, except the rear quarters, they got 4 coats for block sanding. More boring pics.

while blocking the driver's door, I noticed a series of dimples. I decided to grind down a little to see what it was, this is what I found. A bunch of cheap bondo and a crappy repair job. I did a little more grinding after I took this picture and it was even thicker on the top. I am going to keep grinding away until all the cheap beige bondo is gone. I will have to bang it out a bit, then weld the holes shut, and then lay in some good Evercoat filler.

I was originally going to paint it black, but I am questioning my ability to spray, so I am probably going to paint it red.

The decision was finally made last weekend and it was the harderst one I made in my entire life, what color to paint my Dart? After I started blocking out the Dart, I realized that the 8 months of body work paid off, its as flat as a board.

I bought the paint and clear Saturday, Dupont Jet Black Basecoat and Matrix MS-42 2:1 Clear. So black it is!

black (or any solid color) is the easiest to spray.....its the buffing and polishing(if you choose to sand and buff) that will test your patience

Black will be cool!!!
After seeing your shop you've inspired me, I have been letting the size of my shop keep me from doing body work, I think I will go start sanding on my car right now!!

I have 40 inches on each side of the car, plenty of room for me and a roll around seat. Actually, being so small makes it easy to clean and vacuum.

Just because there was no cost advantage. I ended up getting the Base/clear, and all the reducers/hardeners for $230.00. If it was a quickie paint job, I would still use the stuff.
