How to protect headers from getting crushed
« on: December 04, 2007, 12:25:01 AM »

The TTI headers look like the best popular headers made.  They appear well made and designed, but being a header, there is a big tube in the form of the collector that must go somewhere, and that is under the car.  Has anyone done something to protect their headers?  I was thinking of some form of skid plate.  I just don't want to have this happen:

A bit off topic, but while looking for a pic, I found this of a BMW header.  I guess it's an equal length header.

Alot more clearance than it looks. I'd go with the cow catcher.

That BMW header looks like something I extruded with Play Dough as a kid.

That's actuallly very similar to what would have happened to mine, had i not had a skid plate on them. For whatever reason, the driver side header for the dart sits very low underneath the car. I don't have pics of this right now, because the engine is out of the car. But I can get pics of the skid plate that I have on the header. I'll try to get some pics this weekend and post them. if not tomorrow, then certainly on Sunday.

I've heard that TTI's actually don't hang low like these (they are either a cheap hedman or hooker). But I don't know, because I've been too cheap to pony up the dough for the TTI's.

I've never seen a pic of the TTI headers from the side without any angle so I can see how far they actually hang down.  Anyone have them in their car that can measure how far under the frame rail they sit and weather it is a 383 or 440?  Thanks.

I got the new engine in on saturday and was able to take some really bad pics of the skid plate on the header. Take a look and see what you think.

The TTi's on RB are tucked up tight. You can barely see the collector. I can snap some better close-up pics later this week for you.

The car got wavy when I reduced it's size. It ain't that bad. Grin

Here are mine. They are not bolted onto the head. They've never scraped.

Yep - you have to try pretty hard to smash the TTI's.

Another reason why I like my Schu's.  Ground clearance!!!  Might be giving up a few horses, but I don't have to worry about ground clearance.

My oil pan is lower than my headers and i have never hit that yet? I have the cppa's which are the same. If you want some pics just ask.

Here is how my 2" TTI's look from the bottom, sorry no side shots and the car is 640 miles away at the new house so I can't get any side shots.

I have not had any trouble with clearance driving on the street.

Interesting - the CPPA's extend back farther than the TTI's.

Hey BigtimeAuto - are your collectors positioned just at the rear of the crossmember?

Dart67 - I'd be more worried about the oil pan hitting than the headers!  Grin I love the "y"'s too, looks awsome!

TTI's and Thorley's are the only cure. If you headers look like the ones in the pic you will never be able to stop them from being assulted by road hazards or burning 5&7 plug wires. Yes, they are cheap and will get you on the road. But that's all you can say about them. (They do make good engine test stand headers though, since the test stand doesn't go anywhere.)
