Need drivetrain suggestions
« on: December 04, 2007, 04:48:05 AM »

Can't find any '69 buckets and console with shifter, brackets, and linkage so I can use B-body HP exhaust manifolds and power steering, so I've decided on 2" TTI headers and manual steering.  The car is still a small block now, but I have a 440, 727, A-518, 8-3/4, 3.23 posi in both 741 and 489 flavors, a spool mount V8 K-frame, and 22" 3 row radiator.  I'll probably step up to a 26" 3 row since the inlet and outlet are on the wrong sides.  This is a street only car.  I've owned a 3.91 geared Coronet R/T, and can say I didn't like it on the freeway, but around town it was great.  I was thinking of low gears and an A-518 with an Ultrabell.  Final engine would be a 512" 440Source stroker with their aluminum heads and an Indy dual plane intake.  I'm not trying to fool anyone, but the look of these heads and dual plane are as far from stock looking as I want to go.  I hate single plane intakes on street motors and the flat ends on Indy and Edelbrock heads.  Does that Indy DP fit flat hoods?  I like adjusting valves, so a solid cam would be great. Any advice?

If you're gonna keep the 3.23 rear, the 518 trans and the trouble installing it is overkill.  I'd say that a 28" tall tire coupled with a 3.55 gear will keep revs down enough and still run strong.  If you like the stock look, use the 440 source heads when they come out with a performer rpm intake but grind all of the edelbrock crap off and paint the whole motor, heads and all.  With an air cleaner on it, it'll look stock.  With 512 cubes you'll be able to use a pretty big hyd cam and still have it sound close to stock.

3.23 is just what I have now.  I was thinking 3.91 or lower with the A-518.  Rev it when I want, but keep the revs low on the freeway.  Less wear with the short piston and with better MPG, it would get driven more.  What's the downside to solid cams.  I have three stock motors with solids now.

The only downside is that they will require re-adjustment periodically ( you said no problem ) , and there is an issue with the lack of zinc in most oils for adequate lubrication in a solid lifter application. You / we,  need to add an addative (GM EOS ) at oil change time to get the oil where it should be.  Why not go roller ? You can still adjust those .

The oil problem applies to hydraulic flat tappet cams too.  If the solution is to go roller, what type of roller set-ups are unreliable?  Are there certain types that are for racing only that tend to fall apart?  Is it the .700" plus lift cams that have problems?  I like adjusting valves, but I don't want to have to take all the lifters out for inspection all the time and have to keep replacing them along with the springs.

There are various lobe designs that can be had. Some are of the agressive type needing high valve spring pressures (1000 lbs + open) to keep the lifter following the cam lobe, while others are more mellow and will require less spring as well a having extended life. Check the Comp Cams catalog and you'll find there are several versions listed for street and full on race. Take a peek at which springs they are using for which cams and I'll bet thee is a difference in their pressures and requirements. There is also the retrofit hyd-roller cams that, I suspect, will become more popular due to this poo-poo oil we're stuck with. These sound more like they are up your alley for what you want to do. Although the fun of adjusting the valves will be gone.  Undecided

What compensation should be done when selecting a cam for a big motor?  I can't believe the RPM range would be the same for a 383 as it would be for a 440, let alone a 512.

There are these cams:

So if I run 3.91 gears, and in overdrive of .69:1, I'd be about 2000RPM at 60MPH.  Would I want the XR274R X-Energy solid roller with 2000RPM-6000RPM range, or would the 512" shift the power band lower, and want the next size up cam to cruise in the power band?

I believe the 512 will shift the power band to take at least the next step up cam.
Maybe a 1.6 rocker too.
Hughes has som more agressive Hyd roller grinds.
