I have a Dana 60 out of a truck that the guy who I bought my engine from basically threw in for free. It has a 3.73 trac lock in it, in which I was planning on using with a TF727 on my combo. But now I plan on going with a T-56 six speed and a much higher gear ratio. I am to the point when I need to have my rear cut down and set up. I know that the carrier break is at the 4:10/4.56 ratios. I also know that I need to run a 4.10 at least with the t-56 but I would really like to run either a 4.88 or a 5.13. I've been looking at the Strange Engineering Catalog and they have a 4.30 gear that fits the 3 series carrier (4.10 and below). So I can either go with this gear or change over to the 5 series carrier (4.56 and higher). And that is where my questions arise.
If I decide to go with the 3 series carrier 4.30 gear can I just change out my gear and use my existing trac lock or what? And if I decide to upgrade to the 4.88 or 5.13 gear what all does it take to convert over to a 5 series carrier, and can I still use my same housing?
Also I thought that I had at one time seen a 4.56 gear set that fit the 3 series carrier but I can't seem to locate that again. Does anyone know if anyone makes a gear for the 3 series carrier above the 4.30 gear?

Keep the 3.73 and run the T56 w/ the .62 6th gear. It may make 1st gear a little more usable

I thought about that. Will it almost be unstreetable if I run a 4.88 or a 5.13 with about a 28.5" tall tire? And what first gear should I go with? The 2.66, 2.97, or the 3.36?

Your housing will work work with either carrier. There is a big strength difference between the trac-lok and the power-lok from what I've heard. I would just break down and buy a power lock. If you using a 28.5" tall tire, I'd definitely go for at least a 4.30 or 4.56 with such a tall overdrive gear.

Ok thanks...I just deleted a bunch of stuff. Weird thing is that I only had 15 messages in it. I've had way more than that before.

Where does the Detroit Locker fall in this?
