U bolts

Sorry for the dumb question- Regarding U bolts that attach leaf springs to a dana 60 or 8 3/4, what is the diameter of the bolt material? I know I need a U-bolt for 3" axle tube and I know the length, But my local shop wants to know what size stock to make them out of (3/8", 1/2"...?). I don't have the old U bolts to look at, and I'm not sure if the U bolts for a Dana 60 axle are made from bigger stock than U bolts for a 7 1/4. I don't want to order them online because I can get a better price locally. Thanks in advance for any help. -Jay

I would not think they have to be custome made . they can be bought off the shelf from napa or any fastener shop or a good spring shop should have them in what ever size you want.

I'm going to a spring shop. They make them on site on an as-needed basis, and want to know what stock I want them made from. The price is right. I reserve NAPA for emergencies only due to their high prices.

they are 1/2 inch fine thread ... make sure you get the nuts and washers for the same guy ... the washers he has are super heavy and the nuts are longer then hardware store items ....

1/2" x 20. I lucked out and found the long ones like the factory at Lowes. They weren't rod couplings, just longer than normal nuts.

but are they the same grade as the nuts that are used for this purpose? for that matter I would question the strenth of any bolt that was made by someone that cannot insure they were heat treated properly, they have no way of knowing what they made is of the proper grade and quality. is somthing as cheap as a few bolts worth risking your neck for ?
