402 Crate Motor
« on: February 16, 2006, 10:31:11 PM »

I know this is a big block discussion board, but hopefully you dont mind the question.  I am considering the "small" block 402 crate motor...
Does anyone have any information on this crate motor?   I have a 69 Dart 340 4 speed right now and want to put this motor in there...
or...have the 340 redone compression 10.0 to 1 and cam would be a purple shaft 292/508...and put the edelbrock performer heads on it...any thoughts on the crate vs redoing the original motor that the car came with...
thank you

You could sell your motor now to fund the next motor.

Sounds like it is split...both have advantages I guess...someone said a small block 440???   I am just looking to get around 410-430 hp...
any suggestions on the rockers???  I was reading in one of the posts that certain roller rockers need a taller valve cover???

With the prices of original cars skyrocketing, why change a 340/4spd car to anything else than orginal???...It's money in the bank to keep it similar to stock (or at least hang on to the original motor).

Is it an original 340 4 speed car?  If so, I would either drive it, or bag the original motor and put something in there you are not afraid to destroy...

The cam is a drag strip only job, recently removed one from a 360 crate short block, lumpy idle, no vacuum and did not make power under 3000 RPM.  Mopar has not designed a new cam since 1984 and I would ot recommend using one.  I have a hughes cam in the 340, smooth idle, plenty of vacuum and comes on strong at any RPM.  The Mopar cam in the 360 was replaced with a grind  from straight line performance and it performs as good as the Hughes.  Comp cams has some grinds specifically for Mopars and should be considered.  The 360 is equipped with eddy heads and intake and they provide satisfactory performance.
