Powder coating torsion bars
« on: December 08, 2007, 10:29:46 PM »

I'm in the process of blasting and powder coating all of the suspension parts.  Are there any types of coatings the will crack due to the twisting of the bars?  Or will it be fine w/ powder coating?

I've heard heat is a no no on torsion bars but I'm not sure 400 degrees is enough to harm them.

I think the powder coating would crack off them.

Powder coating will not live on A tbar. I have a dumpass friend who did it and it pealed off as well as made the bar weak. So had to buy new ones.

Survey says.... NO.  Thanks for the input.  I assume spray paint (ie. Eastwood's chassis black) will hold up fine.

Any paint that remains flexible when cured will work.  You could use paint designed for exterior plastic parts, such as bumper covers, or add a flex agent to single stage acrylic enamel automotive finish.  Most of the chassis black paints are the flexible type.

I talked to my powder coat guy this past weekend. He said that powdering torsion bars are not going to hurt them. The thickness of the bar is too thick for any distortion to happen. He did the coils for my Koni coilover shocks last year and I have had no problems at all. He also told me that getting them done by someone who knows what they are doing is the key. Many guys out there can powder coat, but you should ask around and see what kind of work this guy has done.

I powder coat, and the powder will last, stick and not affect them. If the powder failed on a set, it is most likely due to cleaning issue, curing issue or bad powder.
