Need Help. I've decided that I'm going to stroke my 383. From all the postings 440 Source seems like the way to go. I need some help on cam, carb and manifold set up. For now I will be running the 906 heads that I have, but will change to 440 Source later. I'll be running 727 trans and I have a 8 3/4 with 430 suretrak. What stall speed convertor would be best? Car will be used for street and strip(not everyday driver but still drivable). I'm looking for hp in the 500-550 range. Oh! car is '73 Duster.

Thanks Steve. This info. is helpful. I'm building a 496 using the 383 block with 440 source stroker kit. I was hoping to here what others have used with the these basi parts.

For cam- there's a guy on this board who has made about 500 hp with Comp cams grind #XE295HL. It has lift of .564/.564 and duration of 251/257 @ .050" tappet lift. This is the cam I will likely use for my 383 to 496 stroker. Intake- Edelbrock performer RPM consistently gets high ratings on this site. As for carb and converter- I'm still figuring out these issues myself. Good luck!

Steve, thanks for the link to that article.
In part 2 we bolted on some Indy heads and blew the motor up. One thing that I found out after the article was written was that the stock oil pump had a bunch of casting flash on the inlet side that was blocking the oil flow. That pump worked fine at 500 hp but when we turned the wick up over 600 hp the pump just couldn't flow enough oil volume to keep the bearings safe and it ate itself up.
That was a nice little motor though before it spun the rod bearing. With the MP .557 cam and the Edelbrock heads it really would've been a stop light monster in an A body car. That would've been a great motor to have back in the day. Most guys would not have ever suspected a 383 block of having a 440 crank in it!

Andyf.................Please forgive me if some of my questions are stupid. I'm trying to get as much info. as possible before my build. I've read that some engine builders are increasing the oil pickup tube to 1/2". With the build you did would the larger pickup tube have help prevent the problem?

No, a 1/2 pickup would not have solved the problem in that 383 stroker motor since the restriction was in the pump itself. Here is a picture of the pump blockage on the left. On the right is a new pump that I ported to eliminate the restriction.

Andyf Great picture Thanks. So with the new ported pump would you run the 3/8 or 1/2" pickup? Also is the oil pump high volumn or high pressure?

I always wondered what really happened to that engine. Although, I pretty sure that when I do my stroker 383/489 (.030) that I will buy the complete kit from 440source and a set of their heads. I see no reason to use a 413 or 440 crank when the cost of the fully balanced 440source kits are less than if you peice it together yourself. As for the intake, I like the RPM, but if I was running a cam that big, I would probably run a Victor or M1 intake.

Thanks for the info Andy. My 400/499 has the Hemi pickup, Larger passages to the pump, radiused turn in the block before pump, and masaged pump passage like your modified pic. I think the 3/8 tube wouldnt hurt much as they usually use larger tubing from the theads down. Rick

69 Swinger,3.54 Dana, 400/499, Stealth heads, Crower 262/266d, .686/.696L roller,11 to 1, 950 Bigs, E85 carb. Best so far, 10.82 @ 124mph through the mufflers.

If you go to Mancini Racing web site.Go to comp cams section.It will recommend what carb. and stall convertor to use for each cam.On left side of cam info..
