questions about '84 Ram trans swap
« on: February 17, 2006, 08:24:23 AM »

A coworker just sold me a decent '84 3/4 ton Ram 2wd longbed, with a 318 and a 4 spd. It has 65k miles and runs fine on the 2bbl. But it will run better with the Edelbrock carb and intake, and MSD 6A that will go on the truck when the warmer weather arrives. The red paint is oxidized and needs a good buffing, but otherwise the body in great condition.

I will definately switch to an automatic, and I was wondering how difficult it would be to put in an A518 overdrive trans.

Would I need some type of computer?
What kind of kickdown linkage would I use? or do I even need that?
Any websites that deal with this type of swap??

Sure would like that extra gas saving gear, but if it's too much trouble I'll go with a 727.

thanks for any info Cool

If it's a 95 or older A518 you shouldn't have much trouble... you can use a switch for the overdrive and the lock-up  Grin kick-down linkage is the same as the older trans I think

Cool Truck.  Is it a 3-speed with a creeper or???  Just curious why the swap?  Have you thought about an OD 833?

hey Andy, the trans in it is bigger than an A833.  Maybe an NP435 trans??. The RPMs when cruising around town are pretty low. I still need to find out what gear ratios are in the trans and the Dana

I want the swap for ease of driving, At times it's hard to shift into some gears, and when cold the truck wants to lurch when going in reverse, so it can't go backwards very slow.

thanks for the info guys....the '95 and earlier tip makes it easier to hunt for one
