Topic: 727 trans rebuild (Read 401 times)

I've been reading the posts on which trans to run and even some on rebuild your own. My question is..How difficult is it to rebuild a 727 and are special tools required? I consider myself an above average wrench. Or would it just be best to buy one?  I'd appreciate any input! Gene

I rebuilt my 727 years ago. From what i can remember the only special tools needed were a good selection of snap ring pliers, inch pound torque wrench and a lot of clean space and patience. Although the job went relatively smoothly and the tranny worked well, aside from being able to brag about doing it myself (I've done Ford C4's also) I don't think I would do it again. Not worth the time and effort.
Just my opinion....

Yes 727s are a tough, dependable and easily rebuilt trans. Get with CRT on parts and beef up goodies. They also sell a good rebuild manual for the specifics. You also can benifit fron a tool to hold down the clutch piston spring retainer. Although you can do it in a vice. http://coperacingtrans.com/techinfo.htmRick

Now I remember what I used to hold down the clutch piston spring retainer - my freinds fingers!!! The tool is probably a better bet and you don't have to buy it beer.
