Has anyone installed green bearings at home? How big of a press do you need? I remember my dad putting the axle in the freezer and the tapered roller bearing in hot oil and just dropping the bearing on. If I time it right, it will be -25F to -30F outside tonight (much colder than a freezer) and I could get the oil up to +300F. Should be a drop on fit. Any thoughts?

i have a 20 ton press...it goes on easy. do not put the green bearing in hot oil. ![\/][](http://www.bigblockdart.com/Smileys/classic/finger020.gif) you will melt out the grease and possibly the seals. i do prefer to heat the wedding band to install, my feeling on doing this is it makes sure there is no oil or grease on the contact area so the band locks on well.

I didn't cool it down but we bent two 1/2 plates doing it,make sure its not cocked its hard.I use a 60ton but it didn't have to be that big.Pressing the 3 in. studs on the axle were harder, we had hell.I thought i could use a hammer (wrong) good luck , bentwheel 43

Thanks for the advise! I haven't seen those bearings yet, I'm picking them up tomorrow. I can see the issue with the grease, I thought those bearings were some type of open roller. Does the wedding band have a smaller bore? I can measure each. I guess that wedding band could get some heat if it's smaller.

I think you got it backwards...You'd have to freeze the bearings and boil the axles...That's what my cookbook says.... ...When you freeze things they expand, and when you heat things, they shrink...Right?

metal will contract with cold and expand with heat Sue. IE if your installing a pressed bearin or race you freze it to easy installation (-300 or so Freon works well)

Water is one of the rare liquids that forms a crystalline solid that takes up more space than the liquid state. The reason for this is because of the shape of the water molecule and the angles that it forms when it bonds, the solid form of water actually ends up taking up more space than liquid. Not sure where we are going with this one...........

Well just be sure you don't stick your tongue on that frozen axle.... ...It would be terrible going to an Emergency room with an axle stuck on your tongue.... ...

Cold steel and moist surfaces aren't a good match. All kids in the north have that one drilled into their heads.
