Surface rust question: If I fully sand it down, I planned on using SEM rust-mort to kill any pits. Directions say to wipe it on, let it dry..THEN remove excess residue with water. Now....won't that start the rust on the surface again??? Also: then what is the next step on the wet washed, then dried rust mort surface? a spot prime? primer sealer? (please don't say epoxy over the rust mort) THEN: when and how to apply filler to this repair for any small dings or large pits? Eldubb: don't you use rust bullet? how would you go from sanded steel (with some pits) to top coat? your work is awesome!!

no rust bullet under finish paint........i like navel jelly with a little warm water, work it in with a wire wheel on a slow drill. two appplications usually get to the bottom of the pits, sometimes 3. then etch prime, or epoxy. i have other uses for rust bullet, its awesome stuff. ..........also, i seen Flyboy use "evapo-rust", looks like awesome stuff. i think its the same thing a "safest rust remover" i really want to check this stuff out http://safestrustremover.com/

Just search Evaporust on ebay, Nebraska Hot Rod is who you should buy it from, best price. You can also buy quarts and gallon sizes from O'Reiley's and Harbor Freight, I think Autozone might also have it. Evaporust is a chelator, it actually lifts and seperates the rust from the steel, leaving clean metal. The only bad thing is it only works when it is wet, so you have to soak parts, spray it over the surface, on I have sen some people wet a cloth diaper with it, set it on the metal, then cover it with plastic to keep it from evaporating or drying.

I also have a similiar question. On my dart the roof was rusted of course and had small pits. I ground down the metal and used naval jelly on them i wire wheeled the areas first. Im wondering what to do to cover the small areas , some area's its just one pit here or there. I tried bondo on a few spots and sanded it down, my thinking was to sand the bondo just about all the way off till you see just the filled pit. But when i did my black primer u can see all the pits again, there filled but u still see them. So my ques is how should you put on the filler , dont sand so far or what. I was thinking i didnt want any more filler on than ness. and you would see where it starts and stops even after attempting to blend it i thought. This is my daily driver and im no bodywork expert but i want to keep it from getting any worse , and im on a fairly tight budget. Thanks for any input. J.R.

my method..........after pits are clean and metal is bare; i scratch it with 100 grit by hand, then i apply epoxy primer. after the epoxy is cured, i rough the pitted areas, bodyfill, and reprime.
