Por-15 Pro's vs. Con's

Ok this is the sisuation  a friend of the family is a auto body man and he was giving me heck for not using Por-15. So I figured I would through it out there for some opinions.  Tell me what ya think.

I've never used POR 15.  But I have used a product called Zero Rust.  I cut it 3:1 with hardware store acetone and spray 2-3 light coats.  This stuff kicks ass.

I have use it. It is OK but will fade flat if it see's UV light.

Well from what he was telling me I am just gonna seal the metal with it. But the thing is I then have to use there filler and products to prevent bonding and bleeding issues from what I am reading.

I used POR-15 on a rust free 77 Roadrunner 2 years ago. I did exactly as instructed by POR-15 and I still got rust creep and my paint started bleeding after 6 months or so..I wasnt pleased with the POR-15. I wouldnt recommend it either...

Wow, I'm surprised by this. I painted my workbench with it years ago as I was skeptical as to how tough they claimed it was. I figured if it survived there, it would last ok on a car. I held tight.

For the price, and the fact that you won't die from using it, who would use POR-15?

I never really trusted any of the miracle stuff for rust.  I've always sanded or wire brushed down to good metal, then prime and paint.  I'm sure there is some good products out there, but I never had any problems the "conventional" way.

Well after doing loads of reading I am going with Eastwood Epoxy primer a lot more positive feedback than Por-15 did thanx guy's.

Everyone has there own opinion on this subject. You can not cut done a product if the surface prep was not done right. POR-15 has to be on exactly as they tell you with there Metal Ready spray. If you have it on to long, it will leave a white film on the surface. If this is not removed, the POR-15 will not stick to that area. Then you will end up getting moisture biuld up uder the POR-15. I am not saying this is the best product out there. But to get the best results with POR-15, it has to be done right. I have used this for almost 8 years and had good luck with it. Just my opinion!!

I've started using POR-15 on a couple applications just to see how well it handles it. All are in rough enviroments purposely to see how it fairs: cast iron thermostat housing (inside and out), Mid 80's poopy peeling paint on Ramcharger's roof sheet metal (painted over) and the spray shields behind the front tires on the Dart. The tests are on going...

I have heard good things about ZeroRust also, but no info on long-term. I agree though getting rid of the rust before is best, I then use rust converter (the good A/B stuff), then topcaot that with Rust encapsulator, then paint epoxy over that. I have never had a problem with it. BTW, I used Rust Encapsulator on a rust 8 3/4 that I installed in my Dakota years ago, I drove it in the Salty Michigan winters for two years, never had any rust re-appear on the rear end, my rear fnders rusted out though.

Test: Took a sandblasted piece of sheet metal, Put POR-15 on according to the directions from POR-15. After it dried a few days. I hit both side of the metal with a ballpeen hammer. The POR-15 did not even crack. Well at least I know it will not break up under pressure like that.

Well I'm in the middle of wire brushing the entire underside of my car, got it to almost all bare metal, but still can't decide what to paint it with.

There are lots of pocket with rust under there that I can't get a brush into.

So in tyical girlie fashion I have bought both POR-15 and Rust encap.  Gesh!

I personally like to spray on a light coat of rust converter before the Rust Encapsualtor. I either use the Eastwood 2-part thinned and then I spray it through Preval's or I jsut buy a can of Rustomeums coverter. Then I topcoat it with Encapsulator.

Money saving tip: Buy a quart of Encapsulator for $30 and buy four Preval's, thin it with laquer thinner 20%, this is much cheaper than the 4 cans of Encapsulator in a spray can. About $40 cheaper.

I use POR-15 but only on places that don't really show like the chassis, suspension parts, floors. I actually painted my leafsprings with the stuff. Since the Dart isn't road worthy yet I don't know how well the painted springs will hold up.

Never used Por 15 but looks like the spray gun and bottles could be used for a camping trip shower after finished.

I did the underside of my enclosed trailer with Zero Rust.  Took about a gallon and a half.  It was an Ohio trailer so it was pretty rusty, but I pressure washed the crap out of it and added Simple Green to the spray to degrease.  Then I hit the bad spots with a scraper and wire brush.  I used a $12 sprayer from Harbor Freight and shot two coats on the entire underside.  That was 3 months ago - so far so good!  We had a good bit of rain lately so I'll crawl under there periodically to see if any rust is forming or if I missed a spot.

my routine is wire brush w/die grinder or sand blast out all the rust you can. clean it really well (paint prep)then use a rust convertor I use oxy solve, spray or brush on 2-3 applications dry overnight. scotch brite places like under car or trunk .resand exterior areas. the bad areas rust encapsulator(eastwood). the rest a good epoxy primer. done quite a few cars no problems. the oxy solve alone on bare metal will hold for a long time on a car stored indoors

i did a entire engine compartment last winter ..   i got a kit from por 15 ... i got the stuff that can handle uv light ....
my opinion on it so far is that it is a good product but it isnt what the ads make it sound and for the price i will NOT buy it again ...
i will just use rust mort and to seal it and then spray it whatever color i want... 
for ereas that needs somthing  more stronger than paint    bedliner works and lasts about the same as por 15 ..  they even smell the same and its alot cheaper to buy .. bedliner makes a good sound deadner compared to POR when its sprayed in wheel walls  ..
