Tool Inventory
« on: January 03, 2008, 10:56:00 PM »

Hello:
Just curious here...how many of you have a written record or inventory of your tools..I recently did a inventory of mine per my insurance  agent.  You would be suprised how much a few tools add up to.  Could yoiu prove what you had if need to?  A written inventory and some photos or VCR tape DVD disc go a long way toward convincing that  insurance company.  Yeah I know its a bitch to write all those tools down so I built a list in excel. For those interestered, drop me a large 12 X 8 3/4 envelope Self addresed with 2 units of first class postage.

I'm an insurance restoration contractor and it's amazing how quick we can "accumulate wealth" over the years. I'm highly reccomend video taping everything. It's the best way to document what you own. Open every drawer, closet and cabinet and film it. It all adds up very quickly and you are in a winning position with your insurance co if you can produce a detailed video. Most important part............keep it off site, at work or a friends house, and don't forget if you get an event it might be wide spread. I live in Co..........mine's at my sisters in RI.
Take a moment and think about that closet you haven't looked in for a month, make a mental list of what is there, then look and see how much money you would have lost if you made a list for the insurance company based on your memory instead of a video.

OMG! I can't even begin to imagine what my tools are worth, probably as much as my car.

Read the fine print in your policies too. A lot of times you are restricted to a maximum value per category (unless of course you want to pay extra $). A couple of good examples are jewellery or a stamp collection. Most often they are limited to a couple of thousand dollars. The devil is always in the details. Having said that, taking videos is an excellent idea.

I have the serial numbers of my tool boxes and digital pics of all my tools in my safe deposit box.  I got hit once years ago and my hand box only was 5500 dollars to replace.

I'd do an inventory but then I'd have no excuse to buy more tools. I'd really know how many I really have. \/][

I don't plan to put windows in my new garage. If you have to, look into the security laminates by 3M. I've started installing them on the new windows in my house. About as hard as window tint... Not bad, the glass is all flat and square. Also check out a product called Door Armor. Using that too. Last but not least, put American Padlocks in your garage door tracks so the door can't be rolled up. Lock your tool box to a lollycolumn or floor anchor. It only took my tools being stolen once for me to become a thief's worst nightmare.

i have to keep one for my service truck, and my shop box through work, my house boxes are outlined per tool in my homeowners.  the total appraisal for the work boxes from snap on was just over 50 grand and a little over 17k at the house, my company did not beleive our estimate and sent a corporate rep, needless to say my shop has cameras now.  i had no idea i have spent that kind of money over the last six years also never realized how many duplicate and triples i have of tools

We have to  inventory are tools at work.My work hands me a paper to fill out already pre-printed with tool items. The damn paper didn't even have metric on there. There was about 3 sheets that said "other" I spent more time filling that one out. Then i got a great idea.I brought my digital camera to work and took pics of everybodies tools and boxes and burned it on cd's for everyone. When i handed mine to the boss an argument insued because he said i had to fill out the paper ,not burn a cd.Who the hell am i ? Fred Flinstone? That's ok.He asked for it.I spent the next 3 hrs on company time filling out my papers.A holes
