Too much gear?
« on: January 08, 2008, 02:44:18 PM »

I've purchased this rearend for my prostreet build.  It's a 8 3/4 sure grip with 4.30 gears. The rearend is being installed into a 73 Duster that will not be a daily driver, will be street legal and see some freeway driving to get to the track(approx. 40 miles). The motor that will be going in is a 383 30 over, 440 source 496 stroker kit, 906 heads hopefully 440 source heads. Still figuring out the cam, manifold, and carb. Trans is a 727.  Since the rearend is not installed I plan on moving it back an inch for taller tires.  I have a couple of questions.  First, are gears too tall?  What torque converter would be best? Approx. what size tires can I run.  I plan on doing a mini-tub like shown in tech page.  Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Gene

with a 4.30 and 28" tires, figure about 3600 rpm at 70 mph. At 6000 rpm, you will be at 116mph.

Fly, those numbers don't seem too bad. I just have to make the trip a cruise not a rocket?

Thank you!

Not as bad as I thought it would be either, but definately not a long distance cruiser. Maybe with a Gear-vendors OD unit.

What are you putting this engine in? 496 makes a lot of torque, requiring less gear multiplication. I briefly had 430's in my Charger and they drove me insane. What does your car weigh?

If you've already got the gear, I'd use it.  Since you're moving the rear back an inch 30 inch tall tires will fit.  I'd go with 315/60/15 MT drag radials.  At 65 mph with 30" tires and 4.30s, you should be around 3100 rpm.
